The Building Permit Technician plays a key role in supporting the City’s development process by managing permit intake, ensuring accurate records, and delivering high-quality customer service to the development community and public. The role maintains essential permitting and plan review data using My Government Online, ensuring accuracy and compliance across all records. It also supports financial operations by processing permit and utility fees. Through these responsibilities, the position helps ensure an efficient, transparent, and customer-focused permitting experience.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

- Facilitate the permitting process by managing the intake, processing, issuance, and close-out of permits using the My Government Online system, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and high-quality customer service.
- Serve as a primary point of contact for applicants, contractors, developers, and the public by providing clear guidance on permitting requirements, coordinating plan review communication, and supporting timely issue resolution.
- Ensure contractor eligibility by reviewing and maintaining required licensing and insurance documentation in accordance with applicable standards.
- Support financial accuracy and compliance by calculating, collecting, and recording permit-related fees; maintaining daily financial records; and preparing required reports.
- Maintain organized and accurate permitting and plan review files, respond to inquiries regarding codes, inspection schedules, and procedures, and contribute to a smooth development review process.
- Perform related duties as assigned to support departmental operations and ensure an efficient, customer-focused permitting experience.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS & PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Two (2) years permit processing or customer service experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- My Government Online experience preferred.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
COMPETENCIES AND ENVIRONMENT
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of regulations, codes, and procedures related to permitting, plan review, and contractor licensing, including the ability to interpret and apply them accurately.
- Skill in preparing clear and accurate correspondence, reports, and departmental documentation.
- Skill in effective verbal and written communication to ensure positive and professional interactions with City staff, contractors, developers, engineers, architects, and the public.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships and provide helpful, customer-focused service in a variety of situations.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This position requires lifting up to 30 pounds occasionally. Subject to vision constantly; sitting, handling, fine dexterity, hearing and talking frequently; standing, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, reaching, bending, twisting and balancing occasionally; kneeling, climbing and foot controls rarely.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Working conditions involves sitting for extended periods of time; occasional exposure to toner/ink cartridges and/or other hazardous chemicals.
