Gas Technician I

Job Description

Overview

The Gas Technician I is responsible for supporting the construction, maintenance, and operation of the City's gas distribution system. This position works under the supervision of a Crew Foreman and performs a variety of semi-skilled and manual labor tasks. Responsibilities include driving work vehicles and operating semi-heavy maintenance and construction equipment as needed. The Gas Technician I also performs other related duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

• Keeps crew truck clean and assists with inventory of parts and supplies to keep the truck stocked

• Cleans parts and tools and performs daily maintenance and/or calibration of equipment

• Uses small hand tools, tapping, and stopple equipment. Performs semi-skilled and common labor work such as paint and/or wrap pipe, cutting and threading pipe, pipefitting and assists in other pipeline maintenance as required frequently lifting up to 100 pounds with assistance

• Prepares tap cards and/or various inspection reports and documentation in accordance with department procedures and/or regulatory requirements

• Assists in pressure tests, purging and putting in service new and existing gas mains in the City Gas distribution system

• Installs or repairs mains, services, and meter loops. Removes and/or exchange gas meters as part of construction and maintenance work tasks

• Performs plastic pipe fusion using poly fusion and electrofusion equipment

• Operates a 1-ton truck, 2- and 12-ton crew trucks, 3-yard dump truck, pickup trucks, ditchers, air compressors, and welding equipment; inspects and operates backhoes, trenching machines, air compressors, and other semi-heavy maintenance and construction equipment

• Performs mowing edging trimming and clean up of all Gas Department yard areas

• Assists with the maintenance and operations of all principal gas valves in the city system

• Works on chart records and runs chart routes throughout the City Gas Distribution system

• Assists with the installation and maintenance of large volume gas meters.

• Helps load meters weighing up to 800lbs on truck and helps place meter in position at installation location, including preparing pipe fittings and assisting the welder with line-up.

• Under moderate supervision monitors and adjust district gas pressures staying within safe operating limits

• Operates gas control valves to alter gas flow during emergencies and other gas related projects, with and without supervision

• Responds to emergency leak calls and gas odor complaints

• Checks for leaks at meters, regulators and on customer premises

• Inspects and lights customer gas appliances

• Maintains and controls odorizes at City Gate Stations making sure adequate odorization is kept throughout the system

• Requires a good sense of smell to detect the odor of gas

• Works on chart recorders and runs chart routes throughout the City Gas Distribution system

• Overhauls, inspects and repairs designated regulators and relief valves in accordance with the rules and regulations of the TRRC

• Maintains accurate and legible records for TRRC on designated regulators, relief valves and odorizers

• Performs maintenance on gas regulator stations including building and grounds

• Assists with maintenance of odorizers at City Gate Stations

• Assists with the overhaul and repair of designated regulators and relief valves

• Operates gas control valves to alter gas flow during emergencies and other gas related projects with supervision

• Checks and adjusts digital correcting devices, downloading readings, programming and installing

• Maintain handwritten and computer records of large volume meters

• May be asked to perform other duties as assigned

Position Type and Typical Hours of Work

• Non-Exempt - Full-Time - Monday / Friday 8:00am - 5:00pm

• Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays is a schedule requirement

Qualifications

• Highschool Diploma / GED

• No Prior Experience Required

Licenses and Certifications

Required

• A valid driver's license is required; successful out-of-state candidates must be able to obtain a valid Texas driver's license within 90 days of hire

Required within six (6) months of hire

• Certified to fuse Poly pipe

Basis of Rating

A recruitment consultant will evaluate all applications against the posted qualifications and may request additional information. The city may also conduct additional skill assessment tests, in addition to the panel interview.
