Individual must be a licensed attorney in good standing in the State of Texas, have had two or more years of experience in the practice of criminal law in Texas, have lived in the City of El Paso during the preceding 12 months, and be a resident of Texas. Considerable knowledge of: Texas State Law and City of El Paso Ordinances governing misdemeanor offenses, including conditions pertaining to juvenile defendants; court protocols and procedures. Ability to: adjudicate a significant volume of cases promptly and efficiently; clearly and concisely explain pertinent legal information to affected parties; fairly and impartially enforce judicial authority.
General Purpose
In accordance with the law, serve as a Substitute Associate Judge reporting to the designated Presiding Judge. Serve on call, as scheduled, as judge for cases involving Class "C' misdemeanors and as magistrate for defendants arrested by the El Paso Police Department and other local law enforcement agencies.
Typical Duties
In accordance with the law, serve as a Substitute Associate Judge reporting to the designated Presiding Judge. Serve as scheduled for temporary court under the direction of the Presiding Judge, as judge for cases involving Class "C' misdemeanors and as magistrate for defendants arrested by the El Paso Police Department and other local law enforcement agencies. Involves: serving as judge at trial sessions, pretrial sessions, civil parking hearings, and other court hearings; serving as magistrate on day, evening, graveyard, weekend, and holiday shifts; handling a significant volume of cases impartially and efficiently; advising defendants and other interested parties of charges, rights, legal opinions, and rulings; reviewing documents presented to establish proof of legal compliance; assessing judgment and fines; recording determinations of court; hearing preliminary pre-trial motions; handling additional cases as assigned by the presiding judge; performing other related duties as required.

This is an Appointed On-Call position for the City of El Paso Municipal Court.
Duty Hours:
This position requires evening, night, weekend, and holiday shifts. Associate Judges will be scheduled for these shifts.
- Must be available to substitute during normal business hours, Monday-Friday.
- Must handle a high volume of work in a fast-paced environment.
