Essential Job Functions

Operates industrial laundry equipment in the sorting, routing, washing, drying, and distribution of soiled bedding and clothing in order to fulfill the clean laundry needs of multiple County facilities.

Assigns, trains, directs, monitors, and provides feedback to inmates in their daily duties of unloading, sorting, tagging, bagging, transporting, and loading of laundry from receipt through to final distribution in order to maximize productivity and safety.

Loads, unloads, and transports clean and soiled laundry upon receipt at loading docks, through the multiple work stations within the laundry facility, and into vehicles transporting clean laundry to end users located throughout the County.

Sorts and routes laundry for flatwork ironers or transport to the appropriate washing/drying machine stations within the laundry facility.

Documents daily work progress and accomplishment/issues of concern on production reports.

Assists in keeping laundry and linen records regarding items received, distributed, and available for distribution.

Cleans linen carts according to laundry procedures in order to avoid mixing of clean/dirty laundry and preparing the carts for subsequent use.

Stores empty linen carts in designated areas within, and adjacent to, the laundry facility in order to have carts available where and when needed.

Visually inspects and manually sorts badly worn clothing and linens into rags.

Uses sewing and manufacturing equipment to assist in the production of bedding, clothing items, and mattresses for the use of facilities County-wide.

Requirements

REQUIREMENTS TO QUALIFY
No training or experience is required.

PHYSICAL CLASS III - MODERATE: This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIRE


As part of this application process, applicants will be required to complete a supplemental questionnaire. The questionnaire contains a pre-investigative questionnaire which will be implemented as part of the background investigation process to ensure applicants meet the standards set forth by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Applicants who fail the pre-investigative questionnaire will be disqualified and will have to wait three (3) months from the date of the disqualification in order to reapply.

THE COMPUTERIZED MULTIPLE-CHOICE TEST IS NOT REVIEWABLE BY APPLICANTS PER CIVIL SERVICE RULE 7.19.

APPLICANTS MUST ACHIEVE A PASSING SCORE OF 70% OR HIGHER ON THE EXAMINATION IN ORDER TO BE PLACED ON THE ELIGIBLE LIST.

TRANSFER OF TEST COMPONENTS

Applicants who have taken identical components recently for other exams may have their responses automatically transferred to this examination.

This examination contains test components that may be used in the future for new examinations and your test responses may be transferred.

TESTING ACCOMMODATION
If you require an accommodation to fairly compete in any part of the examination process, you will be required to submit documentation from a qualified medical provider or other qualified professional to support your request for a testing accommodation. Please note, you will be contacted at a later time by a Sheriff's Department representative that will guide you through the process. You will be provided with an initial deadline to submit documentation. Failure to submit the required documentation by the deadline will delay your participation in the examination process and consideration for initial placement on the eligible list.

TEST PREPARATION

We provide study guides and other test preparation resources to help candidates prepare for employment tests. While the guides may help in preparing for the test, we recommend reviewing all related materials that seem necessary.

VETERAN'S CREDIT
If you are a veteran, you may be eligible for veteran's credit, which is an additional 10% of the total points added to a passing score. We will need a copy of your form DD214 to review, so please include that with your application or email it to the exam analyst at sheriffexamsunit@lasd.org as soon as possible so, if you are eligible for veteran's credit, we can include it before the list is available.

ELIGIBILITY AND VACANCY INFORMATION

Applicants who passed the assessment(s) are placed on a list in the order of their score group for a period of six (6) months. Applications will be processed as they are received and added to the list accordingly. We will use this list to fill vacancies in the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, Custody General and Specialized Division, Pitches Detention Facility and North County Correctional Facility as they occur.

NO PERSON MAY COMPLETE IN THIS EXAMINIATION MORE THAN ONCE EVERY SIX (6) MONTHS.

SPECIAL INFORMATION

AS PART OF THE HIRING INTERVIEW PROCESS, CANDIDATES MUST SUCCESSFULLY PASS THE CUSTODY FACILITY SECURITY CLEARANCE. UPON SUCCESSFUL CLEARANCE, A TOUR WILL BE PROVIDED.
SUCCESSFUL APPLICANTS MUST COMPLETE A THOROUGH BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION, INCLUDING FINGERPRINT SEARCH. Examples of disqualifying factors include: Any felony convictions; job related misdemeanor convictions; certain serious traffic convictions or patterns of traffic violations (3 moving violations in one year; failure to appear; at fault accidents; suspended license; driving under the influence); poor credit history; poor employment history; substance abuse; anyone on probation.

ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY IF HIRED
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (Department) has a " zero tolerance " policy for its employees for the following:
  • use of narcotics, controlled substances, and/or prescription drugs without a prescription.
Any employee found in violation of this policy will be subject to discharge.

WORK CONDITIONS

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department operates seven (7) days a week, 24-hours a day. Appointees MUST be willing to work:

  • at the following Sheriff's Department jail facilities within Los Angeles County: Pitchess Detention Facility and North County Correctional Facility.
  • various shifts, including days, nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • in a jail facility where you will be working with and monitoring the work of inmates.
