POSITION

Under close supervision, performs and assists in the preventative maintenance of automobiles, trucks, and light and heavy equipment.

This list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this class. Incumbents in this class may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

TASKS
  • Oils, Fuels, lubricates, and checks fluid levels on vehicles and equipment following the manufacturer's specification;
  • Replaces, repairs, and balances tires and tubes; inspects and adjusts the air and hydraulic brake systems;
  • Checks, repairs, or replaces lights, mirrors, wiper blades, oil, air, and fuel filters, and other vehicle parts requiring routine maintenance;
  • Perform simple mechanical work such as replacing spark plugs, water, and fuel pumps, and changing valve cover gaskets;
  • Assists mechanics in more complex service and repair of vehicles and equipment;
  • Performs road repairs such as exchanging service vehicles, changing flat tires, replacing damaged mirrors, lights, and other items as needed;
  • Enters repair orders and keeps records of work completed in an automated system;
  • Steam cleans, washes, and polishes vehicles and equipment;
  • Completes inspection sheets to inform other mechanics of problems, progress, and parts used;
  • Assists other fleet maintenance staff in the completion of work activities;
  • Cleans and organizes fleet maintenance shop.


QUALIFICATIONS

A high school diploma or equivalent, AND one (1) year of experience in performing lubrication, tire repair, general vehicle and equipment maintenance, or repair. Possession of Class B driver's license at the time of application is preferred. Must obtain and maintain Automotive Service Excellence in auto maintenance and light repair certification (G-1) or equivalent within six months of appointment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS
  • Knowledgeable of preventative maintenance procedures for automobiles, trucks, and heavy and light equipment, and occupational hazards and safety guidelines, of use of power and hand tools used in equipment maintenance;
  • Skilled in working within deadlines to complete projects and assignments, following oral and written instructions in English, and establishing and maintaining positive and productive working relationships;
  • Ability to perform routine mechanical repairs, assist mechanics in more complex repairs and service, repair, change, and balance tires, follow oral and written instructions, complete work orders and maintenance records, and communicate and work effectively with co-workers.
  • Proficient in the use of a personal computer and industry-related software.


WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Work is performed in outdoor and service garage environments. Work may require frequent standing, walking, bending, and lifting 75 pounds. Incumbents may be exposed to repetitive motion, moving automotive parts, traffic, hazardous fumes, and chemicals.

THE SELECTION PROCESS

Applicants whose experience best meets the city's needs will be invited to participate in the examination for this position. Candidates must have access to a computer with internet, video, and audio capabilities to participate in our examination process. The examination may consist of one or more of the following: (1) Training & Experience Evaluation, (2) Writing Exercise, and (3) Qualifications Appraisal Interview with a panel of subject matter experts. Candidates must receive a score of 70 or higher to have their names placed on the active eligibility list for one year. The top three ranks on the Eligibility List will have their application materials forwarded to the hiring authority for a selection interview.
