Examples of Duties
This is a trainee-level position in which individuals will receive in-service training and are given detailed instructions pertaining to the Social Services Eligibility programs. Other vital duties include:
- Perform interactive interviews and identify eligibility for public assistance programs and services.
- Connecting customers to community services and programs.
- Collect and analyze financial data to determine eligibility for multiple aid programs or child support obligations.
- Explain policies, procedures, and requirements to applicants to inform them of their rights and responsibilities.
- Perform initial application interview for public assistance programs and services.
- Ensure accuracy and completion of application and declaration forms.
- Attend outreach events and assist community members with applying for public assistance programs.
- Assist current customers with retaining benefits through phone call reminders and assistance with verification collection.
- Explain laws, regulations, rules, and policies to customers and guide them of their rights, complaint resolution process, and responsibilities.
- Prepare and process correspondence, reports, and legal documents.
Knowledge and Skills Required
A Human Services Specialist is an integral part of whose mission is to protect lives, promote health and wellness, and provide support and services to help Nevada County residents meet their basic needs and to enhance the quality of life in our community! This position is crafted for individuals who have graduated from high school plus Associate of Arts or Science degree from an accredited college or university in Communications, Business, Psychology, Social Work or a related degree. One year of general clerical or administrative, work experience is required.
Individuals who show patience, understanding, and caring in their dealings with others are highly valued. Other relevant personal traits include social skills, a strong sense of responsibility, and the ability to manage time effectively.
This position is full-time temporary for a maximum of 960 hours per fiscal year. Temporary employees earn sick leave but are not eligible for other vacation or holiday pay, medical, dental, or vision benefits, or CalPERS.
Education and Experience Required
Graduation from high school/possession of GED certificate plus Associate of Arts or Science degree from an accredited college or university in Communications, Business, Psychology, Social Work or a related degree. One year of general clerical, administrative, business office, or technical work experience required. Experience in a setting involving extensive public contact, heavy phone usage, and customer service is preferred.

Sick Leave:
Temporary County employees shall accrue at the rate of one (1) hour of sick leave for each thirty (30) hours worked. Temporary County employees can accrue a maximum of 80 hours of sick leave which may be carried over from one fiscal year to the next.
Medical Benefits:
Temporary employees whose assignments average 30 hours per week or more are eligible to enroll in County-sponsored medical benefits.
