    Essential Job Functions

    An Associate Agricultural/Weights and Measures Inspector p articipates in a structured training program that typically includes rotations between both agricultural inspection and weights and measures inspection enforcement functions, in order to learn and develop proficiency in:

    • Inspection procedures for fruits and vegetables and egg quality standards.

    • Inspection techniques for plants and plant material for pest organisms.

    • Inspection of produce cases, nursery stock, commodities, and other packaged goods weighing 25 lbs. or more.

    • Pesticide use enforcement.

    • Techniques and their application for the control and eradication of weeds and vertebrate pests on residential commercial and agricultural properties.

    • Detection and eradication of exotic pests such as foreign insects.

    • Inspection of commercial meters and scales for accuracy in retail markets and other commercial establishments.

    • Preparation of written reports, inspection certificates, and citations or other notices of violations.

    • Use of a variety of equipment such as refractometers, scales, graduated measures, hydrometers, and laptop and tablet computers.

    • Safe and effective use of various tools and equipment utilized in any inspection, investigation, or enforcement activities that may be assigned.

    • Application of a variety of mathematical formulae, including algebra, in inspection and enforcement activities.

    Requirements

    OPTION I: A Bachelor's degree from an accredited* college or university with specialization in one or more appropriate disciplines in agricultural science, biological science, chemical science, physical science, mathematics, and/or statistics**.

    OPTION II: A Bachelor's degree from an accredited* college or university with specialization in any discipline with a minimum of 30 semester units, or equivalent (e.g. 45 quarter units), in one or any combination of the following disciplines: agricultural science, biological science, chemical science, physical science, mathematics, and/or statistics** -AND- One (1) year of experience*** performing agricultural or weights and measures inspections for a public jurisdiction.

    WITHHOLDS OR OUT-OF-CLASS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. REQUIRED EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION MUST BE FULLY MET AT THE TIME OF FILING AND CLEARLY INDICATED ON THE APPLICATION.

    LICENSE: A valid State of California weights and measures license in either Weight Verification or Measurement Verification**** -AND- A valid State of California agricultural license in Pest Prevention and Plant Regulation shall be obtained within one (1) year from time of appointment****. -AND- A valid California Class C Driver License***** is required to perform job-related essential functions.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION:
    * Accredited colleges and universities include all four-year colleges and universities that meet the accreditation guidelines indicated on this bulletin.

    ** To receive credit for your education, include a copy of your official diploma, official transcript, or letter/certificate from an accredited institution. The document must clearly demonstrate the degree(s) you are in the process of obtaining or have already obtained. For Option II, an official transcript demonstrating the required unit must be included. If your degree was already conferred, the document should show the date the degree was conferred. The document must be in English; if it is in a foreign language, it must be translated and evaluated for equivalency to U.S. standards. Transcripts from foreign universities will be accepted ONLY if evaluated and deemed to be equivalent to degrees from United States accredited institutions by an academic credential evaluation agency recognized by The National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) or Association of International Credential Evaluation, Inc. (AICE). A transcript submitted that is expressed in a language other than English will NOT be accepted and may result in your application being rejected.     *** Part-time experience will be considered based on proration.

    **** Successful completion of the probationary period includes a valid State of California Weights and Measures license in either Weight Verification -OR- Measurement Verification -AND- A valid Agricultural license in Pest Prevention and Plant Regulation within one year from the time of appointment. Failure to provide successful completion of the required licenses prior to the end of the probationary period will result in being released from the position of Associate Agricultural/Weights and Measures Inspector.

    ***** License Information: Applicants for positions that require driving must obtain and present a copy of their driver’s license and driving record from the California State Department of Motor and Vehicles before final appointment. Applicants should not present a copy of their driving history until asked to do so by the hiring department. The County will make an individualized assessment of whether an applicant’s driving history has a direct or adverse relationship with the specific duties of the job. License must not be currently suspended, restricted or revoked.

    VETERAN'S CREDIT: If you are a veteran, you may be eligible for veteran's credit, which is an additional 10% of the total points added to a passing score. We will need a copy of your form DD214 to review, so please include that in your application or email it to the exam analyst at examsunit@acwm.lacounty.gov .

    PHYSICAL CLASS IV - ARDUOUS: This class involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working above ground on irregular surfaces. It includes those positions that occasionally demand extraordinary physical activity such as those in Safety positions.

    Additional Information

    EXAMINATION CONTENT:
    This examination will consist of a multiple-choice and/or simulation assessment(s) worth 100%: General Problem-Solving Skills, Customer Focus, Learning Potential, and Responsibility.

    The passing score for the assessment part is 70%. Candidates who passed the assessment(s) are placed on a list in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months. We will use this list to fill vacancies as they occur. Your score will be valid for twelve (12) months from the date of your assessment results notice.

    MULTIPLE-CHOICE AND/OR SIMULATION ASSESSMENTS ARE NOT REVIEWABLE BY CANDIDATES PER CIVIL SERVICE RULE 7.19.

    TRANSFER OF TEST COMPONENTS: If you have taken identical components recently for other exams, your responses may be automatically transferred to this examination. This exam contains test components that might be used on future exams, and your responses could be transferred to that exam.
