    Major Duties

    Under general supervision, the Community Service Officer provides campus security patrols, public safety assistance, and community support. Duties include safeguarding against hazards, offering community assistance, coordinating special event security, engaging in crime prevention activities, and supporting police operations through timely interventions and documentation.
    • Provides security patrols of the CSUN facilities, grounds, and parking lots.
    • Provides safety escorts to community members as requested.
    • Assists police officers in emergency situations as appropriate and as directed.
    • Reports crimes in progress and public safety concerns to University Police Dispatch.
    • Enforces university policies by seeking voluntary compliance, documenting the incident.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications
    • High school diploma or equivalent and three to six months related experience.
    • Defensive and De-Escalation Tactics.
    • Supplemental security related training through the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS) and Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST)
    • LICENSE: CANDIDATE MUST POSSESS A VALID CALIFORNIA DRIVER’S LICENSE.


    Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
    • Ability to learn applicable procedures and regulations related to campus security and public safety; and learn and use security, fire, and radio systems.
    • Ability to recognize and respond appropriately to potential hazardous or crime situations and observe and recall details and incidents; and act and resolve parking and traffic problems and
    • Ability to write standard incident reports in a clear and concise manner and communicate in a helpful, effective, and professional manner; as well as being clear and concise under stress and non-stress situations.
    • Ability to interact effectively with a diverse group of individuals within the campus community, general public, and law enforcement profession.
    • Possess interpersonal skills and abilities to effectively relay rules, regulations, policies, and directives.
    • Ability to handle sensitive situations with tact and confidentiality and work independently and utilize sound judgement.
    • Ability to maintain a professional and impartial stance in all situations (especially emergencies).
    • Possess problem solving and conflict resolution skills and good customer service skills.
    • Ability to accept instructions and direction from superiors in a positive and dependable manner.
    • Ability to prioritize tasks and independently organize available work time to meet assigned responsibilities.


    Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule
    • The university offers an excellent benefits package, including but not limited to: medical, dental, vision, retirement & savings, tuition waiver and more.
    • Classification: Community Service Spec / 8820 / Grade 2
    • The anticipated HIRING RANGE: $3794 - $4445 per month, dependent upon qualifications and experience. The salary range for this classification is: $3794 - $5956 per month.
    • HOURS: Full Time; 40 hours per week; 6:00pm - 4:00am on a 4/10 schedule.
    • This is a Regular position with a one-year probationary period.

    • The selected candidate must pass a fingerprint clearance (LiveScan).

    • The person holding this position may be considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements outlined in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
