    Essential Job Functions

    Trains inmates in the use of shop equipment and software.

    Organizes work stations and workflow to ensure maximum participation and production levels.

    Supervises the distribution and use of equipment to ensure proper utilization of tools, machines, and supplies, and to prevent misuse and/or accidents.

    Assesses inmate work interest, aptitudes, tolerance, and mechanical ability for determination of work assignments and rehabilitation purposes.

    Creates and maintains records of inmate work and work habits.

    Determines workload, schedule, and standards for inmates based on work tolerance, type of work performed, and custody policies.

    Reviews and evaluates inmate work performance and work products for quality, accuracy, timeliness, and safety.

    Prioritizes and re-prioritizes the work based on customer input and directions received from Departmental higher authorities.

    Designs or adapts customer designs of signs and other media for production.

    Calibrates, maintains, and operates hardware and software for the design and production of signs and other media.

    Creates and maintains a positive and productive learning environment for inmates to gain and apply work knowledge and skills that are applicable to the real world.

    Communicates with customers via email, phone, and in-person to define product specifications, provide the customer with production options, and advise them of physical and policy restrictions regarding the preparation of media.

    Conducts inventories of supplies, tools, and equipment used in the production of signs and other media.

    Orders supplies needed in the preparation of signs and other media.

    Assumes the duties of absent personnel to ensure project deadlines are met and inmates receive adequate supervision and training.

    Requirements

    REQUIREMENTS TO QUALIFY

    OPTION I:
    Completion of 60 semester units or the equivalent quarter units in an accredited college or university* with specialization in education, manual arts, industry arts -AND- One year of experience in the field of vocational rehabilitation, vocational instruction, or as a foreperson in industry.

    OPTION II:
    Five (5) years of experience in the field of sign design/making.**

    LICENSE
    A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to perform essential job-related functions.
    PHYSICAL CLASS
    Physical Class II - Light: This class includes administrative and clerical positions requiring light physical effort that may include occasional light lifting to a 10-pound limit and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved.
    SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION
    * To qualify under Option I, you MUST include a legible copy of the official transcripts from the accredited institution which shows the area of specialization with your online application at the time of filing, or within seven (7) calendar days from the date of filing your online application. The official transcript should be in English; if it is in a foreign language, it must be translated and evaluated for equivalency to U.S. standards.     Official Transcript is defined as a transcript that bears the college seal and states “official” issued by the school’s Registrar Office. A printout of the transcript from the school's website is NOT considered official and therefore will NOT be accepted and may result in your application being rejected.
    **Applicants must have five years of experience in sign design and production utilizing at least one of the following software programs: Adobe Illustrator, Photo Shop, CorelDraw, or Gravograph. In addition, applicants must have five years of hands-on experience operating commercial or industrial-grade equipment such as Edges, Plotters, HP Scitex FB-500, Epson F6200, Gravograph IS 7000, IS 800 Engravers, or the Universal ILS9.75 Laser Engraver. The required experience may be concurrent.

    SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIRE
    As part of this application process, applicants will be required to complete a supplemental questionnaire. The questionnaire contains a pre-investigative questionnaire which will be used as part of the background investigation process to ensure applicants meet the standards set forth by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Applicants who fail the pre-investigative questionnaire will be disqualified and will have to wait three (3) months from the date of the disqualification in order to reapply.

    EXAMINATION CONTENT
    This examination will consist of a structured interview assessing knowledge of the sign shop industry, knowledge of teaching methodologies and related topics, knowledge of graphics software, adaptability, creativity, interpersonal skills, teamwork skills, organizational skills, attention to detail, ability to research and learn information, situational and safety awareness skills, math skills, and oral communication skills weighted 100%.

    APPLICANTS MUST ACHIEVE A PASSING SCORE OF 70% OR HIGHER ON THE EXAMINATION IN ORDER TO BE PLACED ON THE ELIGIBLE REGISTER.

    TESTING ACCOMMODATION

Please note, you will be contacted at a later time by a Sheriff’s Department representative that will guide you through the process. You will be provided with an initial deadline to submit documentation. Failure to submit the required documentation by the deadline will delay your participation in the examination process and consideration for initial placement on the eligible register.

    VETERAN'S CREDIT
    If you are a veteran, you may be eligible for veteran’s credit, which is an additional 10% of the total points added to a passing score. We will need a copy of your form DD214 to review, so please include that with your application or email it to the exam analyst at sheriffexamsunit@lasd.org as soon as possible so, if you are eligible for veteran’s credit, we can include it before the list is available.

    ELIGIBILITY AND VACANCY INFORMATION:
    The names of applicants receiving a passing grade in the examination will be placed on the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of six (6) months from the date of promulgation.
    NO PERSON MAY COMPETE IN THIS EXAMINATION MORE THAN ONCE EVERY SIX (6) MONTHS.

    The list of successful applicants created from this exam will be used to fill vacancies within the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, Custody Services Division, North County Correctional Facility.

    SUCCESSFUL APPLICANTS MUST COMPLETE A DETAILED BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION, INCLUDING FINGERPRINT SEARCH. Examples of disqualifying factors include: Any felony convictions; job related misdemeanor convictions; certain serious traffic convictions or patterns of traffic violations (3 moving violations in one year; failure to appear; at fault accidents; suspended license; driving under the influence); poor credit history; poor employment history; substance abuse; anyone on probation.
