ABOUT THIS POSITION: We are pursuing qualified candidates to fill the Public Health Microbiologist II position within the Department of Public Health. Assists a Public Health Microbiology Supervisor in the operation of a public health laboratory unit by resolving technical problems and developing recommendations on new or alternative equipment, methods, or materials in addition to performing regular Public Health Microbiologist under the general direction of a Public Health Microbiology Supervisor in a duties.

Essential Job FunctionsWhat will I do as a Public Health Microbiologist II?- Investigates problems of micro-organism identification, laboratory equipment malfunction, or difficulties with reagents, media, or other materials or items of supply which cause test results to be unreliable otherwise questionable and takes or recommends appropriate action for their resolution.
- Assists supervision in the search of technical publications and other literature in the field to identify and recommend for management's consideration new equipment, methods, materials, or items of supply which appear to warrant investigative tryout; participates in controlled experiments to evaluate the feasibility or adaptability of the product or procedure into regular laboratory operations and develops appropriate recommendations.
- Verifies that journeyman microbiologists have correctly calibrated test instruments, carried out prescribed quality control procedures, performed first-line maintenance on equipment, and properly completed necessary documentation.
- Monitors the bench-level instruction provided microbiologist trainees and newly hired or assigned microbiologists, and assists supervision in evaluating their progress.
- Performs standardized laboratory tests as needed on a regular workstation for absent microbiologists or when procedure is too infrequently requested to be assigned a regular workstation.
- Functions as the designated relief of a Public Health Microbiology Supervisor I when the latter must be absent from the laboratory unit.
Requirements REQUIREMENTS TO QUALIFY: One (1) year's work experience as a public health microbiologist* in an approved laboratory.**
LICENSE(S) AND CERTIFICATE(S) REQUIRED: Public Health Microbiologist's Certificate*** issued by the California State Department of Health.
A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
PHYSICAL CLASS: Physical Class II - Light: This class includes administrative and clerical positions requiring light physical effort that may include occasional light lifting to a 10 pound limit and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION: *I n the County of Los Angeles, the class of
public health microbiologist is defined as performs a variety of standardized public health laboratory tests within a specialized area (such as bacteriology, virology, serology, or parasitology) or across specialty lines.

An approved laboratory is a laboratory certified by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment (CLIA).

Additional Information EXAMINATION CONTENT: This assessment type will evaluate the training and experience you list on a questionnaire and assign a score based on a standardized scoring system.
This part of the assessment is worth 100% of your total score and assesses: Requirements and Desirable Qualifications.
Candidates must meet the requirements to qualify and must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the assessment in order to be added on the Eligible Register.
Passing this examination and being added to the Eligible Register does not guarantee an offer of employment.
ELIGIBILITY & VACANCY INFORMATION:
Applicants who passed the assessment(s) are placed on a list for a period of 12 months. We will use this list to fill vacancies in the Department of Public Health as they occur.
