Salary : Level I: up to $61,600.00, based on education and experience

Level II: up to $72,600.00, based on education and experience

Work Schedule : Monday - Friday

Primary Hours : 8am - 5pm

Position Description:

The Epidemiologist is responsible for conducting data collection and abstraction, quality assurance, statistical analyses, reporting, and data dissemination for the Oklahoma Violent Death Reporting System (OKVDRS), which is part of the National Violent Death Reporting System. This position also collects, analyzes, and reports data on violence-related injuries and associated risk and protective factors to support multiple federal cooperative agreements in the Injury Prevention Service (IPS).

Position Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

• Receive, review and compile data from multiple sources; abstract information; and enter data into standardized surveillance systems.
  
• Conduct quality checks and surveillance system evaluation projects.
  
• Ensure accuracy, completeness, confidentiality, and compliance with established protocols and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) coding guidelines are maintained.
  
• Determine and utilize appropriate statistical methods to analyze injury-related data sets.
  
• Interpret, summarize, and disseminate data findings through written technical reports and articles, educational materials, grant reports, news releases, and responses to data requests.
  
• Develop and deliver presentations on injury-related data and prevention information for local, state, and national meetings and conferences to technical and non-technical audiences.
  
• Produce data visualizations, including dashboards.
  
• Participate in the design and implementation of surveillance systems, surveys, and other data collection tools to inform IPS programs and evaluations.
  
• Collaborate with partners to interpret and apply data findings to inform prevention and decrease the burden of injury and violence in Oklahoma.
  
• Maintain current subject matter expertise on violence-related data sets and OKVDRS methodology and coding; ensure the OKVDRS project team maintains consistency and resolves unique/challenging coding issues.
  
• Participate in state and national workgroups to discuss injury epidemiology best practices and contribute to special surveillance projects.
  
• Represent the IPS at various meetings and promote the use of injury and violence data to inform decision making.
  
• Being present in the office is an essential function of this job

Minimum Qualifications:

Level I - Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of a master’s degree in public health, biological, medical, or health science which includes 6 semester hours in epidemiological methods and 6 semester hours of other epidemiological coursework and 9 semester hours in statistical methods and analysis.

Level II - Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of a master’s degree in Epidemiology and one year of experience in a field involving the use of epidemiological research, investigation, and analysis or a doctorate in epidemiology.

Level III - Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of a master’s degree in Epidemiology and one year of experience in a field involving the use of epidemiological research, investigation, and analysis plus three years of experience in a field involving the use of epidemiological techniques and analysis or a doctorate in epidemiology and one year of experience in a field involving the use of epidemiological techniques and analysis.

Preferred Qualifications

At least one year of experience in the injury prevention field and/or working with violence-related data sets in a health or criminal justice setting is preferred.

At least two years of experience using SAS regularly to manage and analyze data in a professional setting is preferred.

Level III - Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include knowledge of epidemiology methods, human biology, laboratory methods, environmental analyses interpretation, toxicology, and pathology; of medical terminology; of statistical analysis, biometry, and demography; of epidemiological or statistical software; of social and economic conditions; of current epidemiological developments and techniques; of environmental toxicology, intervention strategies, diagnostic laboratory methods, and medical microbiology; of grant writing; and of quality assurance methods for data collection and analysis. Ability is required to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; to meet with the public and conduct public information programs; to write technical and non-technical information material; to use a personal computer and applicable software; to think critically; to perform with a high degree of attention to detail and consistency; to manipulate large databases; and to develop and implement intervention and prevention strategies as identified through data analysis.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

Work is typically performed in an office setting with climate-controlled settings and exposure to moderate noise levels. While performing the duties of the job, employees are required to talk, stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms; carry light items; drive an automobile. This position requires long periods of sitting and daily use of computers and phones. Applicants must be willing to perform all job-related travel associated with this position. Occasionally, in state overnight and weekend travel may be required. Being present at the office is an essential function of the job
