    Distinguishing Features of the Class

    Under direction, to supervise direct, and assume control of various specialized areas within the total recreation program, or a specialized recreation activity, and to do related work as required. Specialized areas include athletics, environmental education and special events, community recreation centers, community engagement, and special facilities.

    Please read the following paragraphs to learn about the programs that Recreation Coordinators could be assigned to:

    Community Recreation Centers. Responsible for expanding and evaluating recreation-based programming and activities across the City of Des Moines’ three Community Recreation Centers. This position supports program growth and development, community engagement, and high-quality recreational experiences for residents of all ages and abilities. This position also collaborates with staff, volunteers and local partners to ensure our Community Recreation Centers and their offered programs are accessible, inclusive, and responsive to community needs.

    Environmental Education and Special Events. Daily duties will include designing program curriculum, organizing annual affairs (including the Mayors Annual Ride and Yoga in the Park,) preparing and acquiring program gear and supplies as well as presenting programs and educational events in the city parks and facilities. This position will work directly with the public, leading them through activities and educating them to their environment and the wildlife of Des Moines while they ensure the safety and quality of the programs. They will on occasion will be working with and training volunteers to assist with public events and ongoing programs. They will collaborate with sponsors and create community partnerships.

    Community Engagement is responsible for assisting with the operation and coordination of summer camp, mobile recreation, and after-school programs. This position supports program growth, community engagement, and the delivery of high-quality recreational experiences for residents of all ages. The Recreation Program Coordinator also collaborates with community partners and stakeholders to build and maintain strong relationships, enhance program accessibility, and foster meaningful connections within the community through the City’s parks and recreation system.

    Special Facilities. Responsible for overseeing, developing, and enhancing programming, events, and facility operations at the City of Des Moines’ Special Recreation Facilities, including Brenton Skating Plaza, Gray’s Lake, Dog Parks and Enclosed Shelters. This position supports high-quality recreational experiences by coordinating programs, ensuring safe and efficient facility operations, and fostering community engagement. The Recreation Coordinator - Special Facilities works collaboratively with staff, partners, and the public to deliver inclusive, accessible, and innovative recreation opportunities that meet the diverse needs of residents and visitors.

    Acceptable Experience and Training

    • Graduation from high school and two years of group leadership experience in a recreation setting, including concentration in one or more specialties in the field of recreation or sports.
    • A college degree in recreation or a related field may be substituted for the required two years of experience.
    PLEASE NOTE : SUBMITTAL OF COLLEGE TRANSCRIPTS (OFFICIAL OR UNOFFICIAL) IS REQUIRED BY APPLICATION DEADLINE IN ORDER TO RECEIVE CREDIT. FAILURE TO SUBMIT COLLEGE TRANSCRIPTS MAY RESULT IN APPLICATION DISQUALIFICATION.

    Required Special Qualifications

    • Candidates for positions in this class must pass a post-employment offer physical examination and drug screen.
    • License or Other Requirements: Certification in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid, and/or an applicable is required in the first 3 months of employment, valid driver's license is required when work assignment requires said certification and/or involves driving a vehicle.


    Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)

    • Plans, coordinates, supervises, and instructs various athletic recreation activities; leads and officiates one or more activities as requested.
    • Participates in agency planning, research and training, budget and action plan preparation.
    • Works closely with other recreation agencies to assure the proper development of recreational facilities in all areas including athletics, environmental education and special events, community recreation centers, community engagement, and special facilities. s.
    • Works with recreation staff to complete logistic support and supervisory assignments in the conduct of special activities; promotes and publicizes activities with the media.
    • Trains recreation leaders and associates in techniques and application of recreation principles; recruits and trains temporary staff and volunteers; ensures safety of participants.
    • Maintains necessary records and submits required reports.
    • Performs related work as required.
