Who We Are:The Internal Services Department (ISD) plays a major role in supporting all County of Los Angeles departments and commissions. With an annual budget of over $905 million and 2,158 budgeted positions along with over 5,120 contracted workers of varying professions in facilities management, information technology, environmental, administrative, purchasing and contracting. The Opportunity: Positions allocable to this class are responsible for performing journey-level cement and concrete work. This includes laying out work and constructing, forming, and placing reinforcing steel for various structures, pouring and smoothing concrete to desired grade and contour, preparing soil for pouring of concrete, assisting in establishing grades and setting line stakes, and supervising workers and laborers. These positions require incumbents to exercise considerable knowledge of the procedures, techniques, and equipment used in the trade. Positions also require incumbents to exercise a knowledge of safe work practices.
Essential Job FunctionsLays out work, constructs forms and places reinforcing steel as required for structures such as curbs, gutters, sidewalks, culverts, steps, foundations, slabs and walls.
Pours, smoothes and finishes concrete to the desired grade and contour.
Excavates to grade and prepares soil for pouring of concrete.
Assists in establishing grades and sets line stakes.
Supervises workers and laborers as assigned.
Mix concrete.
Drives automotive equipment to and from work sites, which may include combination truck units with trailers of 6,000 pounds gross vehicle weight or over.
Drives vehicles or equipment with gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more.
RequirementsRequirements to Qualify: OPTION I : Completion of a recognized cement mason apprenticeship training program* of at least three years duration.
-OR- OPTION II : Four years of experience in cement and concrete work, one year of which must have been at the journey-level.**
LICENSE:A valid California Class C Driver License is required at the time of appointment to perform job-related essential functions. Some positions may require a valid California Class A or Class B Driver License, and may require special endorsements to operate assigned vehicles.
Successful applicants for this position that require driving must obtain and present a copy of their driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles before final appointment. Applicants should not present a copy of their driving history until asked to do so by the hiring department. The County will make an individualized assessment of whether an applicant's driving history has a direct or adverse relationship with the specific duties of the job. License must not be currently suspended, restricted or revoked.
PHYSICAL CLASS: 4 - Arduous. Involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working on irregular surfaces; and occasionally requires extraordinary physical activity.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS INFORMATION: *To qualify under
OPTION I : Applicants claiming completion of a recognized cement mason apprenticeship training program
must submit a copy of their certificate of successful completion at the time of filing, or within fifteen (15) calendar days from the date of filing your online application. Apprenticeship training programs must be recognized by a national, global, or regional accrediting agency, the California State Department of Education, the California State Department of Labor Division of Apprenticeship Standards, or the Council for Private Post Secondary and Vocational Education.
**To qualify under
OPTION II: Applicants must clearly describe their experience, including type of experience, tools used, and when the work was performed. Journey-level experience is defined as possessing the required knowledge, skills, and training to perform a full-range and diversity of work independently. Persons at this level operate with fairly significant freedom from day-to-day supervision and need little or no guidance on such matters as selecting appropriate problem-solving methods and techniques, locating appropriate regulations, or applying proper procedures to carry out work.
Please ensure application/resume contains detailed information specifically addressing journey level experience, educational background, and/or specialized training courses/programs completed. Also, the required technical experience can be a combination of County and/or outside experience.

Additional InformationOur Assessment Process: This examination will consist of a multiple choice test covering Masonry and Safety On-The-Job weighted at 100%.
Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the examination in order to be placed on the eligible list.
THE MULTIPLE CHOICE TEST IS NOT REVIEWABLE BY CANDIDATES PER CIVIL SERVICE RULE 7.19. Final results will be sent via the email provided in your government job profile. Test scores cannot be given over the phone. Eligibility Information:You will move through the assessment process and if you pass, we will place your results on a eligible list. We will then invite the highest scoring group to an interview. The list of everyone who passed is valid for twelve (12) months.
Applications will be processed on an as-received basis and those receiving a passing score will be promulgated to the eligible list accordingly.
No person may participate in this examination more than once every twelve (12) months; doing so, will result in the rejection of your application.
