  • Job Description

    Distinguishing Features of the Class

    Under general supervision, to direct and participate in the collection of residential refuse on an assigned route. Work involves responsibility for the safe and efficient opera tion of the refuse truck. Work assignments are received from a section chief who reviews work through observation and investigation of customer complaints.
    This position is a seasonal 8-month assignment during March through November. Assigned work hours: 7:00 AM-3:30 PM, Monday-Friday including some Saturdays and holidays.

    Acceptable Experience and Training

    • Graduation from high school or possession of a GED; and
    • One (1) year experience in driving heavy commercial trucks.


    Required Special Qualifications

    • Possession of a valid Iowa Class B commercial driver’s license allowing the operation of vehicles with airbrakes.
    • Candidates for positions in this class must pass a post-employment offer background check, physical examination, and drug screen.

    Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)

    • Inspects assigned refuse truck before use and reports any mechanical issues or other problems to a superior; operates truck during refuse collection activities.
    • Collects and empties garbage and refuse into proper collection containers; empties container into refuse truck; picks up other debris and places in truck.
    • Tags refuse not acceptable for collection to inform customers of proper disposal procedures.
    • Operates truck mechanisms used for loading, compressing, and dumping garbage and refuse.
    • Performs minor maintenance or repairs to trucks and other equipment as needed.
    • Cleans the refuse truck periodically.
    • Performs related work as required.
