THE POSITIONWelder (Regular Part-Time Position) *The current vacancy is in the Public Works Department, Environmental Programs & Operations Division.
The positions assigned to this classification repair, fabricate, and weld metal parts and equipment by using oxyacetylene, electric-arc, MIG, or TIG welding methods, and maintains welding shop equipment and supplies. Performs other metal fabricating, bending, cutting, shaping, and hard surface repairs. Prepares simple daily paperwork of work performed. Performs work in a safe and timely manner. Makes hazardous, confined areas safe and workable. Reads and understands schematics and hand drafted sketches.
Positions assigned to Refuse Services/Transfer Station: Performs repairs to various refuse service bins. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements: Any combination equivalent to training and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be: completion of a welding apprenticeship and one year of journey level welding experience.
Knowledge of: types of welds, joints, and welding rods used in welding operations; cutting and brazing practices and processes, and welding, including metals, their properties, their composition, and methods of identifying and welding metals.
Skill in: the use of hand tools and welding equipment such as lathe, grinders, drill press, brake press, and iron workers; setting up and adjusting ocy-acetylene, electric-arc, and other welding apparatus.
Work Schedule: May be required to work nights, weekends, holidays and odd shifts.
NOTE:At time of hire, the employee will be required to provide their own tools. (Per the CCEA MOU, the City provides $600.00 per calendar year for tools purchased within the same calendar year).
License and Certificates:Must possess a Structural Steel Welding Certificate and a valid California Class C driver’s license. Possession of a valid California Class B driver’s license with a Passenger (P) Endorsement may be required depending upon position assignment.
EXAMINATION PROCEDURESOnly the most qualified candidates will be invited to advance to the next stage in the recruitment process, which may consist of a performance assessment and/or oral appraisal interview with the Public Works Department.
