    About the Opportunity

    THE IDEAL CANDIDATE The Clerk Recorder Department, Elections Division is seeking civic-minded individuals who wish to work on a part-time, seasonal basis. Election Clerks play a vital role in meeting election related, legal deadlines. This position provides the opportunity to learn about the election process and to be part of a team that serves on the front lines of this vital democratic process. Election Clerks will be assigned to work at the main office or at Vote Centers. Vote Centers are early in-person voting locations located throughout Stanislaus County. The Vote Centers open as early as ten days before Election Day. Most Election Clerks return to work seasonally year after year. Election Clerks will be trained to assist voters with obtaining replacement ballots, registering to vote, using ADA approved ballot marking devices, voting in person. This is a great opportunity to be part of a team that is dedicated to conducting secure and accurate elections. As such, political neutrality when performing these job functions is an absolute must. BILINGUAL APPLICANTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO APPLY. Spanish, Assyrian, Chinese, Khmer, Korean, Punjabi, and Tagalog speakers are especially needed. This recruitment is for the next county-wide scheduled election; the 2026 Primary Election scheduled for June 2, 2026. Some vote centers open as early as May 23, 2026. All will open by May 30, 2026. The following are key dates to keep on your calendar (Selected candidates will attend orientation and basic training prior to these dates):
    • April and May 2026 intermittent scheduling will begin and increase as we get closer to the June 2, 2026, election date;
    • May 2026 required training for those assigned to a Vote Center;
    • End of May 2026, the actual set up and staffing of Vote Centers will begin;

ABOUT THE POSITION Incumbents selected as an Elections Clerk will be assigned to temporary intermittent positions during peak workload periods, primarily during the month before and after the election. Weekend work is required for Election Clerks assigned to a Vote Center. Travel is required to staff and prepare the Vote Centers throughout the county. Election Clerks may be assigned to work at a vote center anywhere in Stanislaus County. Most Extra-Help Election Clerks return to work seasonally year after year. Extra-Help Election Clerks will be required to attend hands-on training using equipment to register voters, update voter registration and issue replacement ballots. Extra-Help Election Clerks may also help the main office to prepare for elections by assisting with data entry, preparing for mailings, testing voting equipment and gathering supplies. After election day, Extra-Help staff will assist with the canvass, which includes processing vote by mail ballots, duplicating damaged ballots and counting eligible provisional and conditional ballots as well as other duties as assigned. Candidates for this position must have basic computer skills, attention to detail, flexibility and ability to work with a team. Judgment and initiative in making decisions in accordance with established guidelines and training is required. A professional image and political neutrality is a must. Part-time extra-help is a provisional classification where permanent status may not be obtained. This position is subject to overtime, standby, shift, and callback assignments and will perform related duties as assigned. This position is non-benefited except for participation in a 401a program with Nationwide.     Typical Tasks

    • Perform data entry and retrieval using a laptop proficiently;
    • Provide professional and accurate customer service in person and over the telephone;
    • Follow oral and written instructions;
    • Drive to vote centers and drop box locations;
    • Set up and assist voters with voting equipment;
    • Operate office equipment proficiently (computer, office equipment);
    • Prepare election equipment for distribution to election officers;
    • File documents accurately and rapidly;
    • Explain routine policy and procedures to the general public;
    • Assemble packets and/ or boxes of election materials;
    • Maintain alphabetic and numeric files by filing and retrieving a variety of documents;
    • Inventory supplies; and
    • Other duties as assigned.


    Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education/Experience)

    KNOWLEDGE
    • Alphabetic and numeric filing procedures;
    • Modern office procedures and equipment; and
    • Proper usage of English grammar and punctuation.
    SKILLS/ABILITIES
    • Deal with the public in a tactful and courteous manner;
    • Use a computer keyboard proficiently;
    • Accurately perform a wide variety of keyboarding and general clerical duties of average difficulty;
    • Data entry and information retrieval;
    • Follow oral and written instructions; and
    • Travel to various sites when necessary.

    EDUCATION
    • Equivalent of six (6) months full-time, general office experiences. Relevant college education or business school training may be used to substitute up to three (3) months of the required experience.

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATION
    In addition to the minimum qualifications, applicant screening will focus on the following desirable qualifications. Please list any of these qualifications you may have within the "duties" section of the online application.
    • Typing Certificate with a minimum of 30 Words Per Minute (net);
    • Public speaking experience;
    • Bilingual (English/ Spanish, Assyrian, Chinese, Khmer, Korean, Punjabi, and Tagalog speakers are especially needed)
    • Experience with Microsoft Word & Excel.

    • Application Review and Screening. Applications are carefully screened based on information provided. Those who submit incomplete applications that lack relevant qualifications or do not submit all required documents will not be invited to move on.
    • Oral Examination. Applicants are invited to a panel interview in which they will be evaluated by County subject matter experts.
    • Eligible Lists. Candidates who pass the examination will be placed on an eligible list for that classification. Eligible lists are effective for six months, but may be extended up to eighteen months.
    TENTATIVE RECRUITMENT SCHEDULE Application Deadline: Continuous, but may close at any time. Written Examination: Applicants will be invited to the written exam as qualified applications are received. Note: The eligible list generated from this recruitment may be used to fill future extra-help, part-time and full-time vacancies throughout Stanislaus County.
