    Description
    San Mateo Medical Center is currently seeking a professional, goal-oriented Nursing Supervisor who will plan, organize, direct, and supervise the operations of our acute care facility during the evening and night shifts. As Nursing Supervisor, you will have the opportunity to manage patient care while ensuring appropriate quality of care and compliance with regulations. In addition, your responsibilities will include participating in training, coaching and counseling activities, and other projects as assigned.

    The ideal candidate will possess a minimum of two years of recent charge nurse role experience and/or a minimum of one year of recent nursing management/supervisory role experience in an acute care accredited hospital. A background in ICU/ED and ACLS preferred.

    The successful hire will have delegated responsibility to manage and supervise patient care operations for 100-bed in-patient units with an active Emergency Department, during nights, evenings, weekends, and holidays. The extra-help hours for this assignment are dependent on the business needs of the department and therefore work hours may vary from week to week; specific but not limited to PM and Night shift, weekends and holidays.

    NOTE: This Job Announcement was edited on May 16, 2023 regarding the definition of the extra help assignment. This is an extra-help, at-will assignment, paid on an hourly basis. Extra-help hours are dependent on the business needs of the department and therefore work hours may vary from week to week. Extra help employees shall not exceed 1,040 hours of work per fiscal year. Some extra help positions are eligible for benefits under the Affordable Care Act. Extra help employees are not guaranteed permanent status at the end of the assignment.
    Examples Of Duties
    Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
    • Organize, supervise, and monitor the provision of nursing care and/or related services within a defined nursing unit or program.
    • Maintain an effective working relationship with a variety of public and private organizations, including staff in other Health Services Agency Divisions, County departments, medical staff, other agencies, and private health care providers.
    • Answer questions and provide information to the public.
    • Supervise the enforcement of applicable nursing standards, codes, and regulations, as required.
    • Consult with nursing staff as needed to establish and implement nursing care plans for high risk patients or patients with changes in clinical conditions during the assigned shift.
    • Consult or, if appropriate, perform nursing care following prescribed rules, policies, protocol, and procedures.
    • Identify problems, assist in data gathering, propose solutions, and participate in evaluation of quality assurance issues.
    • Work with patients and their families to address concerns.
    • Participate in non-clinical assignments, which may include maintaining records, preparing reports, and/or serving on special committees.
    • Perform related duties as assigned.

    Qualifications
    Licensure/Certification: Possession of a California license as a Registered Nurse (R.N.).

    Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is three years of professional nursing experience in an accredited hospital or clinic.

    Knowledge of:
    • Nurse Practice Act.
    • Principles and practices of nursing and clinical systems, including safety and infection control practices.
    • Principles and practices of community health care including current trends in research, treatment, prevention, education and related services.
    • Principles and practices of program management, including planning, implementation, and evaluation.
    • Principles of budget preparation and monitoring.
    • Principles of personnel training, supervision and evaluation.

    Skill/Ability to:
    • Organize, direct, coordinate and evaluate nursing services that ensure quality patient care and conform with all prescribed standards.
    • Work cooperatively with other County departments and public and private organizations, including private medical providers.
    • Analyze service delivery problems accurately, develop recommendations and take appropriate action to resolve them.
    • Develop, evaluate and maintain accurate records; prepare complex and detailed written reports, procedures and contracts.
    • Communicate effectively with administrative, medical, professional, clinical and citizen groups.
    • Train staff and coordinate activities of contractors, volunteer groups and staff, as appropriate.
