    POSITION INFORMATION
    Law Clerks with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office work across a variety of assignments throughout the greater Los Angeles area. Under the mentorship of an experienced Deputy District Attorney, Law Clerks receive meaningful administrative and technical mentorship while contributing directly to the Office’s criminal justice mission. This role offers hands-on experience in the practical application of criminal law through direct service within the Los Angeles region. Law Clerks support prosecutorial work and gain valuable insight into the operations of one of the nation’s largest public law offices. Strong analytical abilities are essential, as Law Clerks research, interpret, and apply case law, statutes, and related legal issues. Responsibilities include assisting in the preparation of legal briefs, memoranda, resolutions, and other documents used in judicial proceedings. Successful Law Clerks bring a solid understanding of legal research principles, methods, and resources, along with strong understanding of California state law, county legislation, and administrative law, including relevant regulations and enforcement practices.

    Essential Job Functions

    • Provides support to attorneys in a wide variety of legal tasks including research, study, interpretation, and application of laws, court decisions, and other legal authorities for use in the preparation of cases, opinions, pleadings, briefs, and other legal documents.
    • Assists in drafting a variety of legal documents.
    • Conducts legal research, prepares research memorandums, investigates and prepares written reports on writs of habeas corpus, and drafts points and authorities.
    • Organizes extensive discovery, reports, documents and potential exhibits.
    • Communicates with witnesses, experts, clients and potential exhibits, provides information to judges, attorneys, and the public concerning the work of the department.
    • Interviews clients to obtain factual, biographical and financial information.
    • Provides clients with summary of reports and charges files as needed.
    • Assists in the scheduling of witnesses and prepares witnesses and clients in courtroom procedures and appropriate protocol.
    • Accepts legal process served on the office after regular business hours.
    • Performs various clerical duties necessary to the maintenance of the departmental law library.
    • Performs clerical and computer data input work in connection with legal matters as needed.
