    Job Description:

    Building & Grounds Lead

    Purpose:

    Under general supervision, perform custodial, and grounds keeping tasks in and around City-operated buildings, grounds, parks, airports, and recreation areas.

    Duties, Functions, and Responsibilities:

    Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

    • Performs, assigns, and inspects ground maintenance, including mowing, raking, and mulching leaves, irrigation systems, and water consumption.

    • Performs and assigns minor building maintenance and repair.

    • Performs and assigns custodial duties of restrooms, buildings, and recreation areas.

    • Coordinates crew work with other crews and groups of City employees or contractors.

    • Prepares and dismantles exhibit halls and ballrooms for events.

    • Performs routine administrative duties.

    • Checks, cleans, and services equipment.

    • Performs and oversees minor construction, including erecting partitions, building or tearing down walls, painting, building and/or erecting storage sheds.

    • Responds to citizen complaints.



    Responsibilities - Supervisor and/or Leadership Exercised:

    • May provide leadership, work assignments, evaluation, training, and guidance to others

    • Fills in for supervisor in his or her absence.



    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
    • Knowledge of or ability to learn janitorial or grounds keeping processes, policies, and procedures within the City Department in which assigned.

    • Knowledge of equipment and vehicles used in Building and Grounds services.

    • Skill in oral and written communication.

    • Skill in planning and organizing.

    • Skill in handling multiple projects and prioritizing.

    • Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities.

    • Ability to train others.

    • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with city employees and the public.



    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, and three (3) years experience related to janitorial or grounds keeping services, at least one (1) year of which includes crew experience.

    • One (1) year of additional experience may substitute for one (1) year of High School, up to a maximum of four (4) years substitution.



    Licenses and Certifications Required:

    • If assigned to operate vehicles, must possess the appropriate Texas Driver's License for those vehicles.



    Preferred Qualification
    • Previous experience performing janitorial duties with the ability to maintain a clean and welcoming environment.

    • Experience in leading, supervising, and managing work crews.

    • Ability to assist with onboarding, scheduling, and delegating work assignments.

    • Capable of completing tasks with minimum supervision.

    • Experience in ordering and managing work supplies and inventory.

    • Ability to lift fifty (50) pounds.

    • Available to cover shifts and work various schedules, including days, evenings, weekends, holidays, and possibly extended work hours.

    • Must be able to travel between work locations as part of regular job responsibilities.



    Notes to Candidate:

    The Buildings & Grounds Lead assists the Building and Grounds team in keeping the interior and exterior Library facilities safe, clean, and welcoming environments. The ideal candidate should have prior knowledge and experience in performing janitorial tasks, leading, and supervising crews, and the ability to work independently.

    Key responsibilities of the Lead will include:

    • Ordering and maintaining cleaning supplies and equipment.

    • Delegating work assignments and overseeing daily operations.

    • T raining and onboarding team members.

    • C oordinating setup and takedown of event spaces.

    • Performing administrative duties.

    • Travel using an assigned vehicle, and

    • perform other duties as needed.



    Work Location :

    All South Austin Library Branches (Austin, Texas)

    Salary Range :

    $22.48 to $25.24 per hour

    Hours and Schedule :

    Full Time/40 hours per week (Sunday - Thursday)
    • Sunday 8:30 am - 5:00 pm

    • Monday through Thursday 11:30 am - 8:00 pm

    • Flexibility with the schedule is required. Hours and schedule may vary based on operational or business needs; evenings, weekends, city emergencies, and holidays may be required.

    Essential Personnel:
    • This has been designated as an Essential Employee position. In the event of a city-designated extraordinary situation or emergency condition, essential employees provide services that impact the public health, safety, utility services, and welfare of members of the Austin community and other employees, as well as ensure the continuity of essential operations. Essential Employees may be called back in during such events, required to modify their schedule, assigned to a City-designated work site, or retained on-site to assist with operations and recovery.



    Veteran:
    • Veteran candidates will be required to provide a copy of their DD-214



    Language:
    • Must have the ability to read, write, and speak fluently in English.



    Travel:

    Driving Requirements:
    • This position requires a Valid Texas Class C Driver’s License or the ability to acquire one by your hire date. External New Hires must meet the City of Austin’s Driver Record Evaluation (DRE) requisite . To be considered for a driving position, applicants cannot have more than three moving violations or a total of six Driver Record Evaluation points within a period of thirty-six (36) months.

    City Government
