Head Lifeguard - Aquatics

JOB SUMMARY

This Head Lifeguard oversees the daily operations of the aquatic facility, ensuring a safe, clean, and enjoyable environment for all patrons. It provides leadership and supervision to lifeguard staff, manages aquatic programs, and coordinates activities such as swimming lessons and special events. By maintaining operational standards and enforcing safety protocols, this position plays a key role in promoting community engagement and delivering high-quality recreational services.

2026 Operational Season:

• Opening Weekend: May 23-24
  
• Memorial Day: Closed May 25
  
• Tuesdays - Sunday: May 26 - August 7
  
• Weekends only: August 9 - September 6
  

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Assist the Aquatics Supervisor in overseeing lifeguard staff by enforcing City and Aquatics Division policies and procedures to ensure safety and compliance.
• Support the administration of aquatic programs, including swimming lessons, pool parties, and special events, ensuring smooth operations and positive participant experiences.
• Maintain the pool and surrounding areas, including monitoring chemical levels, cleaning decks and restrooms, and performing routine maintenance to uphold health and safety standards.
• Keep accurate records of chemical tests, program attendance, and lesson completion; prepare reports and communicate facility needs to the Aquatics Supervisor.
• Provide front desk support as needed, including processing admissions, handling cash transactions, and enforcing facility rules to ensure a safe and welcoming environment.
• Communicate effectively with the public, explain policies, and identify and address potentially unsafe behaviors to maintain a secure and enjoyable facility.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS & PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• One (1) season of pool management experience and two seasons of lifeguard/swim instructor experience is required.
• Must be 17 years old.
• Valid Driver's License with an acceptable driving record required.
• Must have an American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification or be able to obtain the certification before start of summer season. (ARCL Certification class will be offered by City of San Marcos)

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

• Knowledge of basic mathematical calculations for measuring and adjusting pool chemical levels.
• Skill in effective oral communication to teach lessons, educate the public, and provide clear instructions in routine and emergency situations.
• Skill in customer service and maintaining courteous, professional interactions with the public in a high-contact environment.
• Ability to remain calm and exercise sound judgment when determining appropriate actions during emergency situations.
• Ability to work independently under general supervision while ensuring safety and compliance with established procedures.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
Physical requirements include working outdoors in heat, humidity and wind. Exposed to chlorine, muriatic acid and other pool chemicals. Navigates slippery surfaces; exposed to noise from crowds, whistles and pump room. Subject to standing, sitting, vision, hearing, talking, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling reaching, handling, kneeling, crouching, bending, twisting, climbing, balancing, handling, foot controls, fine dexterity. Lift over 50lbs rarely.
