    TITLE:Electrician I/II

    SRN A28: $6,540 - $8,946, Monthly, Non-Exempt

    DEPARTMENT: Facilities & Maintenance

    DEFINITION

    Under immediate (Electrician I) to general (Electrician II) supervision, performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled work in the maintenance, repair, and installation of electrical equipment including lighting systems, pumps, controls, motors, electrical circuits, and equipment used in the District’s water distribution and wastewater treatment facilities; performs predictive, preventative, and corrective maintenance on assigned equipment; and performs related work as required.

    Essential Functions

    EXAMPLES OF TYPICAL JOB FUNCTIONS

    • Performs a variety of preventative maintenance duties on electrical systems including switch gears, transfer switches, electrical distribution and control equipment; inspects equipment; checks voltage and amperage; tightens, cleans, and lubricates equipment; and locates potential problems.
    • Performs corrective maintenance duties on electrical systems; isolates power and ground wires; troubleshoots problems and makes necessary repairs; restores power and checks equipment for proper operation; makes minor repairs to light sockets, bulbs, fuses, bearings/bushings in motors.
    • Performs electrical circuit installation for additions or modifications; bends and installs conduit; pulls wire and wiring in circuit as shown on blueprint; tests systems for proper installation.
    • Calibrates and adjusts electrical components including pressure and limit switches, conduits, motors, pumps, or piping.
    • Performs a variety of tests, samples, and readings, to determine if equipment is showing any signs of deterioration; determines appropriate corrective action and implements actions.
    • Conceptualizes, develops, and installs programmable automation controls for a variety of equipment.
    • Assembles and tests experimental motor control devices, switch panels, transformers, generator windings, solenoids, and other electrical equipment components.
    • Records data regarding electrical equipment, including voltage and amps readings and date and type of work performed; updates data in online asset management and computerized maintenance management system.
    • Reviews system blueprints, specifications, and performance data to determine configuration and purpose of system components including motors, pumps, fans, switches, ducts, or pipes; inspects system to verify system compliance with plans and specifications and detects malfunctions in system component parts.
    • Designs, integrates, and upgrades new systems and/or integrates the design into an existing system; develops wiring diagrams and layout drawings for system or equipment modifications or expansion; installs and connects power supply wiring and conduit for existing and new equipment; connects cables and wires between machines and equipment.
    • Oversees the work of contractors; coordinates and inspects assigned work; attends planning and progress meetings.
    • Depending on assignment, works collaboratively with on-call contractors and vendors.
    • Estimates labor, materials, and equipment needed for assigned projects; monitors inventory levels of materials and equipment; orders, receives, and maintains inventory of materials and equipment as needed; maintains work, time, and material records; provides recommendations regarding needed parts and suppliers.
    • Develops Job Safety Analysis and Standard Operating Procedure documents for division and District use.
    • Observes and complies with District and mandated safety rules, regulations, and protocols.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
    Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

    Education: Equivalent to a High School Diploma.

    Experience:
    • Electrician I - Two (2) years of experience maintaining, repairing, and installing electrical equipment.
    • Electrician II - Four (4) years of experience maintaining, repairing, and installing electrical equipment.
    Licenses and Certifications: Possession of a valid California Driver’s License, to be maintained throughout employment.

    Knowledge of:
    • Operational characteristics of electrical equipment, components, and test equipment.
    • Electrical and electronic technology principles and practices.
    • Principles, methods, materials, and tools used in electrical repair and maintenance work.
    • Principles of electrical theory as applied to electrical circuits and wiring systems.
    • Methods and techniques of maintaining, installing and repairing electrical systems and equipment, troubleshooting electrical equipment and components, and high voltage electrical system maintenance and repair.
    • Operational principles of a water production, water distribution, and wastewater treatment facilities.
    • Hydraulic relationship between wells, booster stations, reservoirs, lift stations, and irrigation pumping facilities; installation, maintenance, and repair of pumps and pump apparatus.
    • Principles and practices for the installation, maintenance, and minor repair of electric motors and relay logic.
    • Electrical safety regulations, practices, and procedures; National Electrical Code; NFPA-70E (National Fire Protection Association).
    • Principles of diesel engine operation and troubleshooting
    • Occupational hazards and safety equipment and practices related to the work including confined space requirements.
    • Basic arithmetic.
    • Principles and procedures of record-keeping and reporting.
    • District and mandated safety rules, regulations, and protocols.
    • Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors, and District staff.
    • The structure and content of the English language, including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
    • Modern equipment and communication tools used for business functions and program, project, and task coordination, including computers and software programs relevant to work performed.
    • Operational characteristics, and the safe and proper use of, machinery, tools, equipment, and materials necessary to perform assigned duties.

    Ability to:
    • Perform a variety of repair, maintenance, and cleaning duties on electrical equipment and systems.
    • Inspect, troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair electrical and electronic malfunctions.
    • Operate a variety of electrical repair, maintenance and installation equipment in a safe and effective manner.
    • Bend and install conduit, pull wire and work on control wiring and equipment.
    • Use electrical test equipment.
    • Design basic electrical controls.
    • Effectively develop and plan out jobs using appropriate cost control and scheduling methods; estimate necessary materials and equipment to complete assignments.
    • Prepare records and basic reports.
    • Read, interpret, and apply a wide variety of technical information from manuals, drawings, specifications, layouts, blueprints, electrical schematics, and operating and maintenance manuals.
    • Make accurate arithmetic calculations.
    • Maintain accurate logs, records, and basic written records of work performed.
    • Use tact, initiative, prudence, and independent judgment within general policy and procedural (add legal if applicable) guidelines.
    • Effectively use computer systems, software applications relevant to work performed, and modern business equipment to perform a variety of work tasks.
    • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, using appropriate English grammar and syntax.
    • Establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
