    Sheriff Schuster has been hard at work on a 10 Year Strategic Plan for the development and future of the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Schuster presented the 10 Year Strategic Plan to the Mohave County Board of Supervisors Budget Workshop meeting on May 17, 2019. Sheriff Schuster is hopeful that we have the support we need and will see the requested budget increase adopted this August. As always, Sheriff Schuster continues to fight for the citizens and his staff to ensure the safety and security of our communities and the ability to provide top-notch law enforcement and public safety services.
    About the Position:

    Performs first line supervisory level security work involved in the custody, control, care and welfare of inmates in County detention facilities. Employee in this class series is responsible for the supervision of assigned personnel and the activities within an assigned area or shift and may perform any or all duties and responsibilities required of a Detention Officer.

    Essential Job Functions

    • Supervises, coordinates, directs and participates in the activities at the Adult Detention Facility of an assigned shift, and/or other designated areas, such as Support Services Section, Fugitive and Warrants Section or satellite substation detention facility(s).
    • Provides coordination and oversight of remote transports, out-of-state extraditions, medical and Department of Corrections transports, etc.
    • Prepares performance evaluations; may make hiring recommendations; recommends disciplinary actions; approves vacations and time off; prepares work schedules and assignments; supervises the activities of assigned personnel; monitors reports and recordkeeping activities filed by assigned personnel for completeness, accuracy, and adherence to policy and procedure guidelines; instructs personnel in departmental policies, procedures and techniques; and provides training.
    • Supervises, coordinates and performs a variety of administrative staff work such as scheduling, maintaining records, responding to request for information or services, investigating problems within assigned area or shift, performing related administrative, planning and research activities, and preparing communications, statistical information and briefing and budget materials.
    • Conducts investigations of inmate complaints against Detention personnel and other internal investigations as directed by the immediate supervisor, Detention Center Commander, Chief Deputy Sheriff and Sheriff.
    • Assists in and coordinates activities and programs with other areas of detention center, Sheriff Department, County Departments, and other law enforcement agencies.
    • As assigned, briefs probation officers as to the status, behavior and performance of inmates.
    • Meets and responds to inquiries of inmates from irate family members.
    • Prepares complete, accurate reports, records and logs.
    • Conducts training sessions as required.


    Minimum Qualifications

    • High School Diploma/GED (General Education Degree)
    • Two (2) years progressively responsible experience as a Detention Officer or other related detention facility.
    • Experience in facilities having a capacity of 300 or more beds.
    • OR an equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered in meeting the minimum qualifications.

    SPECIAL JOB REQUIREMENT
    • Requires successful completion of at least one (1) year as a Mohave County Detention Officer.
    • Must pass drug screen post offer.
    • Must possess a valid driver’s license for operation of motor vehicles on Arizona roads at the start of employment and maintain said license while employed in this position.
    • Must provide acceptable driving history at no cost to the County.
    • May be required to successfully complete psychological, polygraph, health-related and physical agility testing appropriate to law enforcement individuals.

    • Relevant laws, rules and regulations pertaining to confinement in a detention facility and as applied to inmate rights.
    • Law enforcement investigative techniques as they apply to detention facilities.
    • Department policies, rules, regulations, procedures and unit functions.
    • Principles, practices, methods, techniques, and equipment used in detention facilities.
    • Human behavior and various social, economic and cultural backgrounds.
    • Search, transportation and restraint procedures.
    • Principles and practices of leadership, supervision and training.
    • One or more of the general or specialized areas of a detention facility, such as: Booking/Release, Control, Classification, and Disciplinary.
    • Law enforcement and public relations activities.
    • Legal and court procedures.
    • First aid methods and procedures.
    • The safe and effective operation and maintenance of jail facility equipment to include firearms and restraints.
    • The safe operation and handling of a motor vehicle.
    • Organize, assign, coordinate, train, supervise and evaluate work activities of assigned personnel within an assigned area or shift and to persuade and control assigned personnel effectively.
    • Enforce and explain laws, ordinances, rules, and regulations with firmness, tact, impartiality and discretion.
    • Exercise judgment in relating to people and in responding to changing situations.
    • Respond to emergency situations rapidly with due regard for the safety of the inmate population and assigned and associate personnel involved.
    • Establish and maintain effective work relationships with associate personnel, personnel of other law enforcement agencies, court system personnel, County and City departments, officials, inmate population, and the public.
    • Give and receive orders, to follow instructions, and to work as a team member in a structured working environment.
    • Comprehend, retain and recall factual information.
    • Maintain a safe, secure jail facility and enforce the rules and regulations in compliance with local, State and Federal procedures for the preservation of the rights and safety of inmates and detention facility personnel.
    • Apply training, experience and common sense to identify potentially dangerous situations, to make effective logical decisions, and to exercise the appropriate measure of tact or force to resolve dangerous or emotionally charged situations with minimum injury to self and others and minimum damage to property involved.
    • Demonstrate moral character, honesty, tact, fairness, lack of prejudice and desire to help when dealing with people.
    • Accept dangers, regimentation, discipline and time demands of detention facility work.
    • Prepare accurate, complete and legible reports and to present detailed, accurate and objective oral statements and responses to questions.
    • Perform the essential functions of the job specifications with or without a reasonable accommodation.
    • Obtain proficiency in the use of firearms and restraints
