*Salary range for this classification will increase 5% on each of the following dates: 1/1/2027, 1/1/2028, 1/1/2029* POSITION Under general direction, participates and supervises staff engaged in the operation of the transportation system, including engineering, traffic operations, parking, signs, traffic paint, transportation planning, and signals and lighting.

TASKS - Reviews plans, specifications, estimates, and project studies prepared by staff, consultants, contractors, and developers;
- Collects and evaluates traffic systems, traffic flow, accidents, costs, and other statistics to ensure traffic flow and safety of the community;
- Analyze data, identify problems, and provide innovative solutions.
- Monitors and inspects the work of staff in progress and upon completion;
- Receives, investigates, and responds to citizens’ complaints or inquiries;
- Recommends and enforces policies, procedures, goals, and objectives for the Division.
- Prepares and administers Division budget and monitors expenditures;
- Recommends equipment purchase and assists in developing specifications;
QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor’s degree from a four-year accredited college or university in Engineering
AND four years of progressively responsible experience in transportation engineering. Must possess at the time of application and maintain a valid California Driver’s License. California State Engineer-in-Training or Professional Engineer certification is highly desired.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS - Knowledge of intelligent transportation and traffic management systems technology and applications, traffic operations theory and practice, engineering office practices and procedures, management and supervision best practices, budgeting and purchasing techniques and procedures;
- Skilled in making mathematical computations and design engineering; reading and interpreting engineering plans, specifications, and technical reports; prioritizing and scheduling work activities; providing and following oral and written instructions; and establishing and maintaining effective working relationships;
- Ability to prepare accurate reports, provide and follow oral and written instructions; train and supervise staff; express ideas and information clearly and concisely, verbally and in writing; work with little direct supervision; and exercise good judgment to prioritize and manage workload and other duties;
- Proficient in operating office equipment, including computers and software, fax machines, copiers, scanners, specialized equipment, MS Office software packages, and other industry-related software.
THE SELECTION PROCESS Applicants whose experience best meets the city's needs will be invited to participate in the examination for this position. Candidates must have access to a computer with internet, video, and audio capabilities to participate in our examination process. The examination may consist of one or more of the following: (1) Training & Experience Evaluation, (2) Writing Exercise, and (3) Qualifications Appraisal Interview with a panel of subject matter experts. Candidates must receive a score of 70 or higher to have their names placed on the active eligibility list for one year. The top three ranks on the Eligibility List will have their application materials forwarded to the hiring authority for a selection interview.
