Essential Job Functions

Career Development Intern Program

The goal of the Career Development Intern (CDI) program is to provide at-risk youth, foster youth, individuals with disabilities, and homeless individuals with opportunities within the County of Los Angeles and to assist them in gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to compete for full-time permanent positions.

In a training capacity and under supervision, participates in entry-level work in one of a variety of job assignments.
Available Career Pathways and Examples of Duties Include:
1. Office Support/Clerical Intern:
  • Assists the public by providing directions, instructions, and responses to routine inquiries in person or by telephone.
  • Processes work through data entry on a computer.

    Physical Class 2 - Light: This class includes administrative and clerical positions requiring light physical effort that may include occasional light lifting to a 10-pound limit and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved.


2. Information Technology/Technical Support Intern:
  • Assists in the installation, maintenance, upgrade, and removal of information technology equipment such as personal computers, printers, and related devices
  • Assists in the development of routine computer system usage schedules and uses computer-assisted communication equipment.

    Physical Class 3 - Moderate. Includes standing or walking most of the time, with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching; includes working on irregular surfaces, occasionally lifting objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequently lifting 10-25 pounds.


3. Crafts Support Intern:
  • Assists a journey-level or other skilled craft worker in a variety of maintenance, repair, or construction work by furnishing and using simple tools, materials, and supplies.
  • Cleans work-area machines and operates simple machines and equipment.

    Physical Class: 4 - Arduous: Involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working on irregular surfaces, and occasionally requires extraordinary physical activity.


4. Heavy Maintenance & Operational Support Intern:
  • Assists in the repair and maintenance of roads, flood control channels, sewers, easements, sidewalks, and other publicly maintained properties.
  • Assists skilled warehouse workers in warehouses and at loading docks and in the loading and delivery of heavy and/or bulky supplies and materials.

    Physical Class: 4 - Arduous: Involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working on irregular surfaces, and occasionally requires extraordinary physical activity.


Requirements

Requirements to Qualify:
Be a participant in one of the following programs:

Foster Youth Program - Current enrollment in, completion of, or current or past eligibility for the Department of Children and Family Services' Independent Living Program and/or Probation Department's Independent Living Program (ILP).

County Youth Bridges Opportunity Program* - Identification as an At-Risk Youth by a County of Los Angeles authorized department, other local, State, or Federal agencies or schools; or by a bona fide non-profit organization whose mission includes fostering or enhancing employment opportunities for at-risk youth.

Homeless Hiring Program* - Individuals who are currently homeless, formerly homeless, or at risk of homelessness, as verified by a recognized participating community-based organization whose mission includes fostering or enhancing opportunities for individuals experiencing homelessness, and can provide proof of completion of their job readiness program.

Disability Hiring Program* - Must possess an Individual Facing Barriers to Employment Program certificate or a Schedule A letter from the State Department of Rehabilitation (DOR).

An individual must meet the following DOR criteria:
Has a physical or mental impairment or medical condition that limits one or more major life activities;Has a record or history of such impairment or disability; orIs regarded as having such an impairment or disability.

If you are a person with a disability, you may qualify for a Schedule A Letter through the Department of Rehabilitation (DOR).

To obtain either document, visit your local DOR office and request the Counselor of the Day. Please bring proof of your disability, such as medical records or a doctor’s letter. The counselor will review your documentation and provide your Schedule A Letter.

Note: Some positions may require applicants to meet specific age limitations at the time of appointment.

Special Requirement Information:

* To demonstrate that you meet any of the specialty program requirements, you must attach proof of program participation with your application. Alternatively, if you are unable to attach the required document(s), you may email the document(s) to jcheung@hr.lacounty.gov within seven (7) calendar days of application submission. Please ensure that the exam title and exam number are included in the email subject line.

Applicants who have previously been appointed as a Career Development Intern in any of the following specialties-Heavy Maintenance and Operational Support, Office and Clerical Support, Crafts Support, or IT/Technical Support-for more than 18 cumulative months within that specialty will not be eligible for appointment to that specialty.

Withhold Information:
No withholds will be allowed. Required experience must be fully met at the time of filing and clearly indicated on the application.

License:
Some assignments may require a valid California Class C Driver License to perform job-related essential duties, or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

Depending on the specialized area you are selected for, there may be a general physical examination that you will need to undergo.

Our Assessment Process:
Once we have identified that you meet the specialty requirements, we will invite you to participate in an online, multiple-choice, and/or simulation assessment.

This examination will consist of a multiple-choice and/or simulation assessment(s), weighted 100%, measuring:
  • Learning Potential
  • Responsibility
  • Customer Focus
  • Numerical Calculation


Additionally, candidates will be asked to complete an additional assessment for research purposes, measuring the following:
  • Life Experiences


(Note that your responses on the Life Experiences assessment will not be used to evaluate you on this recruitment. While the Life Experiences assessment will have no impact on your score, we encourage your participation to improve our examination processes.)

You will need to receive a score of 70% or higher to proceed with being placed on the list. Since this opportunity is a noncompetitive, pursuant to CSR 8.02, those who achieve a passing score will be placed on the list without indication of relative standing. Candidates entitled to veteran’s credit will be placed ahead of candidates who are not. For information on veteran’s credit, please review the Employment Information section of this job posting. This list will be used to fill vacancies as they occur.

Exam Review:
This exam is not subject to review by candidates. Multiple-choice and simulation assessments are not reviewable by candidates per CSR 7.19.

Transfer of Test Components:
  • If you have taken identical assessments recently for other exams, your responses may be automatically transferred to this exam.
  • This examination contains test components that may be used on future exams, and your responses could be transferred to those exams.

Eligibility and Vacancy Information:
