    We are excited to hire this full-time position to join our team within the Fire Services Department! The purpose of this position is to lead the development, delivery, and evaluation of training and safety programs for all York County fire departments. This position plays a critical role in advancing operational readiness and firefighter safety through direct observation of fireground activities, post-incident analysis, and alignment of training initiatives with departmental needs. The Fire Training & Safety Officer also serves as the County’s primary safety officer for fire services and provides leadership in health and safety-related policy, training, and investigations.

    Compensation:
    Projected Hiring Range/Pay Grade 117: $27.33 - $32.79 per hour. Salary is determined based on qualifications.

    Duties and Responsibilities:
    • Serves as the department’s lead Training and Safety Officer; develops and coordinates comprehensive in-service and certification training programs for all fire personnel countywide, including volunteer departments.
    • Designs and implements a Countywide Fire Safety Training Program to address identified needs and meet operational performance expectations.
    • Observes and evaluates fireground operations to identify trends, deficiencies, and opportunities for training and safety improvement.
    • Provides input into all pre-emergency, emergency, and non-emergency operations to ensure safety is integrated into planning and execution.
    • Coordinates post-incident analyses with a focus on safety and performance; develops corrective training and procedural enhancements as needed.
    • Investigates occupational injuries, illnesses, exposures, fatalities, near misses, and other hazardous incidents; prepares reports, recommends improvements, and coordinates corrective actions.
    • Serves as the lead liaison and subject matter expert for the County’s Fire Safety Program; collects, analyzes, and reports safety and training program data to command staff and County leadership.
    • Maintains accurate and timely training and safety documentation, including certifications, recertification tracking, training logs, and incident safety reports.
    • Develops and maintains Standard Operating Guidelines related to training and safety.
    • Coordinates with internal and external agencies to schedule South Carolina Fire Academy certification courses, national fire service training opportunities, and specialty training programs.
    • Responds to emergency incidents as needed and serves as Incident Safety Officer or in other roles as assigned.
    • Ensures all required training is reported to the appropriate state and national agencies in a timely manner.
    • Performs related work as assigned.


    About you

    Education and Experience
    • Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Science, Emergency Services, Public Safety or related discipline.
    • Five years of progressively responsible experience in firefighting and training, including supervisory or program management experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

    Special Certifications and Licenses:
    • Required Certifications:
      • IFSAC Firefighter II
        • NIMS/ICS: ICS 100, 200, 700, 800; ICS-300 and ICS-400
      • SCFA or equivalent Fire Instructor certifications, including:
        • Firefighter I & II
        • Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations
        • Pump Operations
        • Aerial Operations
        • Fire Department Safety Officer (FDSO) certification (or ability to obtain within 12 months)
        • Emergency Medical Technician (SC or National Registry)
    • Preferred Certifications:

    Applicants with equivalent experience and/or education may be considered.

    Physical Demands:
    Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
    • Performs medium to heavy work that involves walking, standing, climbing, stooping, lifting, and pushing.
    • May require exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally and 20 to 50 pounds frequently.
    • Must meet the physical and medical requirements for emergency response personnel.
