    Job Description:

    Purpose:

    Under general supervision, this position serves as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) within Austin Public Health providing lactation services directly to clients, facilitating breastfeeding education activities, and promoting lactation support within the community.

    Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:

    Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

    • Provides consultative services appropriate for a professional Lactation Consultant that is certified through the International Board of Certified Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBCLE)
    • Documents encounters with clients according to policies and procedures set by the WIC Program.
    • Maintains complete and accurate records of client status.
    • Follows policies and procedures for maintaining inventory of equipment and supplies.
    • Conducts training and mentoring activities for Breastfeeding Peer counselors and WIC staff.
    • Compiles and submits client statistic reports and participates in Quality Assurance improvement activities.
    • Provides subject matter expertise and technical assistance to other WIC staff as needed.
    • Participates in the planning and implementation of lactation programs within the area of specialization for department-wide use.
    • Mentor health professionals including, but not limited to, medical and nursing students, medical residents, and dietetic interns.
    • Develops and implements presentations focused on breastfeeding promotion and education.
    • Participates in community outreach activities. Collaborates with internal and external clients in special projects and initiatives.
    • Provide WIC breastfeeding activities, including media spotlights, hospital presentations, and events with community partners.
    • Complies with all Federal, State, City, and Local Agency Policies.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
    • Knowledge of breastfeeding physiology, anatomy, and counseling and training techniques.
    • Knowledge of Federal, State, City, and Local policies and regulations that pertain to WIC services, breastfeeding, and lactation consultation.
    • Skill in providing breastfeeding management and excellent customer service and support.
    • Skill in handling multiple tasks, organizing, and prioritizing.
    • Skill in planning and organizing.
    • Skill in using computers and related software applications.
    • Skill in following written and oral instructions.
    • Skill in data analysis and problem solving.
    • Ability to train others.
    • Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively, clearly, and concisely with diverse populations and individuals.
    • Ability to assess current operations on an ongoing basis and implement required changes.
    • Ability to use critical thinking and best practices to apply cultural sensitivity to interactions with the general public.
    • Ability to resolve complex customer complaints.
    • Ability to demonstrate cultural and linguistic competency.
    • Ability to work with and relate to individuals and families from diverse backgrounds and experiences.
    • Ability to interact effectively and professionally with persons from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, education, racial, ethnic, and professional backgrounds; managers; co-workers; and members of the public and professional groups.


    Minimum Qualifications:
    • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus two (2) years of experience in clinic, hospital and/or public health environment.


    Licenses and Certifications Required:
    • Current International Board Certified Lactation Consultant.
    • Completion of all required WIC modules during the probationary period.


    Preferred Qualifications
    • Current International Board of Lactation Examiners Certification.
    • Demonstrates experience in effective communication and providing health education
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office: Word, Outlook, Excel, Power Point, Access, Publisher
    • Bilingual in English and Spanish
    • Experience providing customer service in a health-related role

    Salary Range: $54,350 - $64,660

    This position comes with a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical and dental coverage, paid sick leave, vacation and personal time, and a retirement plan.

    Hours :

    Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

    **Hours may vary due to operational needs. Evenings and weekends may be required on occasion, especially during an emergency response. **

    • Due to high-risk areas, Austin Public Health employees must comply with the department’s immunization policy.


    Grant Funded

    T his position is grant-funded, meaning its financial support comes from allocated funds that may be modified, reduced, or canceled at the discretion of the City of Austin or the grant provider.

    Travel:
    • If you are selected for this position, and meet the Driver Safety Standards in the City of Austin Driver Safety Program, you may drive when necessary to multiple locations as part of your regular job duties. Otherwise, you are responsible for getting to and from these locations.

    City Government

    The City of Austin is a progressive, full-service municipal organization operating under the Council-Manager form of government. Austin has a 10-1 council system with an at-large Mayor and Council Members that represent ten districts.
