Land Use Services Department is seeking motivated and detail-oriented candidates for the position of
Building Inspector I. This entry-level classification is part of the Building Inspector series and is designed for individuals interested in developing a career in building inspection and code compliance.
Building Inspector I incumbents receive structured training and work under immediate supervision while acquiring the technical knowledge and field experience necessary for advancement to Building Inspector II.
Key responsibilities may include:
- Inspect construction, alteration, and repair of residential, commercial, and industrial structures for compliance with applicable codes and approved plans.
- Identify unsafe or substandard conditions; issue correction notices and violations; conduct re-inspections and assist with enforcement actions.
- Perform basic plan reviews and verify qualify of materials and construction methods; provide guidance to builders, contractors, and property owners on code requirements.
- Prepare and maintain inspection reports and records.
- Respond to field incidents by driving to various and remote locations as required.

Memoranda of Understanding (MOU)
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Pre-Employment Process: Prior to appointment, candidate must undergo a background check, which includes fingerprinting and a medical exam.
Promotion: Building Inspectors I are eligible for promotion to Building Inspector II ($ 67,017 - $92,102 annually) upon obtaining required certification (see below); completion of the training program; and receipt of a satisfactory work progress report. Employees must qualify for advancement to Building Inspector II within 24 months or be terminated.
Certification: Incumbents must obtain certification in the appropriate field from a recognized state, national, or international association (as determined by the County Building Official) within two (2) years of hire or be terminated. Incumbents shall also complete a minimum of 45 hours of continuing education every three (3) year period.
License: A valid California Class C Driver License is required to carry out the essential job-related functions of this position. Mileage reimbursement and proof of automobile liability insurance must be maintained.
Physical: May require frequent climbing, kneeling, crawling, lifting and carrying of items weighing up to 25 pounds; working on rough, uneven, rocky, or slippery surfaces; and regularly working at heights over 10 feet.

Minimum RequirementsCandidates must meet
ONE (1) of the Requirement Options in order to qualify.
REQUIREMENT OPTON 1: Experience: Two (2) years of full-time work experience in construction where building permits and abiding by model building codes was mandated.
-- AND --
Education: Fifteen (15) semester or twenty-three (23) quarter units of completed college coursework in building construction/inspection technology or a closely related field.
REQUIREMENT OPTION 2: Experience: Two (2) years of full-time work experience in construction where building permits and abiding by model building codes was mandated.
-- AND--
Certification: Possession of ICC certification (or equivalent) in the California Building Code in one of the following Inspector certificates: Residential Building, Residential Plumbing, Residential Electrical, or Residential Mechanical.
REQUIREMENT OPTION 3: Experience: Two (2) years of full-time work experience in construction where building permits and abiding by model building codes was mandated.
-- AND --
Certification: Possession of ICC certification (or equivalent) as a California Commercial Building Inspector.
REQUIREMENT OPTION 4: Thirty (30) semester or forty-five (45) quarter units of completed college coursework from an accredited college/university in building construction/inspection technology or a closely related field.
REQUIREMENT OPTION 5: Four (4) years of full-time work experience in construction where building permits and abiding by model building codes was mandated.
REQUIREMENT OPTION 6: Two (2) years of journey level experience performing technical duties in a land use, planning, code enforcement or related environment. Duties must include interpreting and explaining rules and regulations to the public.
