    The Job

    The Department of Public Health (DPH), Black Infant Health (BIH) program is recruiting for Social Service Practitioner II-III (SSP II-III) who will provide professional social work services including diagnosis, assessment, intervention, and case management to support pregnant and postpartum birthing individuals and/or their families with complex health, psychological, or economic problems. SSP II-III perform enhanced case management services in office, clinic, and home settings. They play a large role in assisting the families through the transition of pregnancy and the postpartum period. Additionally, they provide support group services; work closely with pediatricians, public health nurses, occupational and physical therapists, and other community personnel.

    ABOUT BLACK INFANT HEALTH

    Within a culturally affirming environment and honoring the unique history of the Black birthing population, the Black Infant Health (BIH) Program uses a group-based approach with complementary client-centered case management to help women develop life skills, learn strategies for reducing stress and build social support. BIH participants participate in weekly group sessions, supported by one-to-one case management designed to help access their own strengths and set health-promoting goals for themselves and their babies.

    INITIAL APPOINTMENT/ADVANCEMENT


    The DPH offers a competitive salary and benefits package and rewards dedicated employees with long-term service commitment to the County. SSP may be hired at the following levels and advance within the series according to criteria established on Professional Unit Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT


    Travel/License: A valid California Class C Driver License is required to carry out the essential job-related functions of this position. Mileage reimbursement and proof of automobile liability insurance must be maintained.
    Work Schedule/Environment: Typical work schedule ranges from 7:30 AM - 5:00 PM, with occasional weekend and/or evening assignments. Employees may be required to visit clients in their homes and other settings to complete biopsychosocial assessments.

    Pre-Employment Process: Prior to appointment, applicants must pass a background investigation which includes verification of employment history and education, fingerprinting, physical exam, and drug screening.

    Sponsorship: San Bernardino County is not able to consider candidates who will require visa sponsorship at the time of application or in the future.

    Minimum Requirements

    Applicants must meet one of the following options:

    Option A: A Master's degree in Social Work (MSW) from a school accredited by the Council of Social Work Education.

    Option B: A Master's degree in Human Services, Psychology, or Counseling with an emphasis in marriage, family, or child counseling, or a closely related field, -AND- either 500 hours of supervised clinical internship, -or- one (1) year of casework experience equivalent to a journey-level Social Worker II in San Bernardino County. ( Note: Experience as a Social Worker II Trainee is not considered qualifying, and should be clearly distinguished from experience as a journey-level Social Worker II on the application.)

    Option C: A Bachelor's degree in Social Work (BSW) from a school accredited by the Council on Social Work Education AND one (1) year of casework experience equivalent to a Social Worker II in San Bernardino County. ( Note: Experience as a Social Worker II Trainee is not qualifying and should be clearly distinguished from experience as a Social Worker II on the application.)

    Option D: Bachelor's degree in gerontology, behavioral science, psychology, sociology, social/human services, anthropology, cultural and gender studies, human development, or criminal justice AND two (2) years of casework experience equivalent to a Social Worker II in San Bernardino County. ( Note: Experience as a Social Worker II Trainee is not qualifying and should be clearly distinguished from experience as a Social Worker II on the application.)

    Desired Qualifications

    Experience working with multidisciplinary medical teams, conducting support and educational groups for parents and children, and working in a medical, Public Health, CCS, or Children and Family Services (CFS) environment are highly desirable.

    The ideal candidate will possess socio-cultural experiences comparable to the population served, along with knowledge and respect of the values and beliefs of Black/African-American women and the Black/African-American community; fully embrace and support the BIH Governing Concepts of cultural competence, client-centered, strength-based, and cognitive skill building approaches; possess knowledge of women’s health, including prenatal and post-partum mental health; be knowledgeable of the life course perspective, infant behavior and development, and local community and social service resources; demonstrate sound communication, counseling, group facilitation and interpersonal skills, along with critical thinking and problem solving skills; posses administrative skills such as report writing, appointment scheduling, case management, and computer use, and the ability to work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team, while adhering the program productivity standards.
