The Position
Environmental Scientists perform program research, planning and development, permitting, compliance monitoring, inspections/enforcement, and technical support services in relation to air, water, waste, federal facilities, corrective action, mining, biology and other environmental programs.
Incumbents function as first-line supervisors who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; assign and review work; and initiate disciplinary action; OR incumbents serve as the technical scientific expert for a bureau within the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.
Serve as the supervisor in the NDEP Bureau of Safe Drinking Water's Enforcement Branch. This position will be responsible for leading a team to assess, inspect, and enforce State and Federal environmental laws and agreements governing public water systems in the State of Nevada. This position is responsible for developing and standardizing the enforcement program, inspecting water systems, drafting and reviewing enforcement action documents, researching regulations and compliance strategies, coordinating with other regulators and public water system representatives, and communicating regulatory requirements required by State and Federal environmental laws. ***THIS RECRUITMENT MAY CLOSE WITHOUT FURTHER NOTICE DEPENDING ON THE NUMBER OF APPLICATIONS RECEIVED. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in the physical, natural resource or life sciences, engineering or closely related field and four years of professional environmental experience which involved environmental program research and planning; OR graduation from high school or equivalent and six years of professional environmental experience as described above; OR one year of experience as an Environmental Scientist III in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above. Special Requirements A valid drivers license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. Additional Position Criteria Do you have experience with public water system laws and regulations? If so, please describe when and where you obtained this experience. Do you have experience enforcing regulations? If so, please describe when and where you obtained this experience. If you currently reside outside of the Las Vegas, Nevada geographical location, are you willing to relocate to the region? Show moreThe presence of Nevada's earliest inhabitants, beginning about 12,400 years ago, is marked by many petroglyphs and archaeological sites. Baskets, decoys, and ingenious traps are evidence of the resourcefulness of these early people in a harsh and arid environment.
European explorers traveled through Nevada in the early 19th century, but it was not until 1851 that the first settlements were established. An Act of Congress created the Territory of Nevada on March 2, 1861. James W. Nye of New York was appointed Nevada's first Territorial Governor by President Abraham Lincoln later that year. On October 31, 1864, President Lincoln proclaimed Nevada's admission to the Union as the 36th state. The State's first elected Governor, Henry Blasdel, took office on December 5, 1864.
Today, Nevada is the nation's seventh largest state in land area. Several hundred mountain ranges cross its landscape, many with elevations over 10,000 feet. In contrast, the State's lowest point (along the Colorado River) is only 470 feet above sea level. From majestic mountains to desert valleys, nature has endowed Nevada with diverse and unique ecosystems.
The Nevada Legislature has honored the State's natural resources and cultural heritage with a variety of State designations described below.
