    The Job

    The Department of Public Health (DPH), Animal Care is recruiting fortemporary Animal Care Partner Liaisons* which are crucial, high visibility positions responsible for supporting strong working relationships with Animal Care Partners. This role provides coordinated assistance to ensure partners can efficiently identify, evaluate, and access animals for potential placement. In addition to partner support, the Liaison plays an important role in the shelter’s media efforts by helping capture, organize, and distribute photos and videos of animals-both on-site and as requested-to support adoption, rescue placement, and promotional initiatives.

    Weekend availability is required. Applicants who indicate they are not available to work weekends will not move forward in the recruitment process. These positions operates on a 4/10 schedule-four 10-hour shifts per week.


    Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
    • Partner Concierge Service: Act as a point of contact and dedicated liaison for our partners ensuring a productive and efficient visit.
    • Guided Access and Navigation: Provide knowledgeable guidance and direct assistance to partners, helping them navigate the shelter environment and expedite the process of identifying and assessing animals.
    • Facilitating Animal Viewing: Coordinate and facilitate partner access to animals, including those in specialized areas such as quarantine, isolation, and medical observation (sick areas), while strictly adhering to all biosecurity, safety, and operational protocols.
    • Staff Coordination: Proactively manage communication by quickly locating and summoning appropriate regular staff, supervisors, or veterinary personnel to answer complex inquiries or address critical partner needs.
    • Operational Support: Assist regular Kennel Attendant staff with essential animal care tasks, including cleaning, feeding, general kennel maintenance, and stocking supplies as operational needs dictate.
    • Documentation and Communication: Maintain detailed, accurate logs of partner visits, animal viewing requests, and any issues requiring follow-up from full-time staff or management.
    • Animal Photography & Videography: Collaborate with the Enrichment Team to capture photos and video footage of the current available pets in our care.
    • Partner Support Media Requests: Work closely with the Rescue Team to obtain specific photos or videos requested by our partners to support placement efforts.

    *Note: These are non-regular, limited duration (up to twelve months) positions classified as a Public Service Employee (PSE) . Incumbents shall be considered at-will throughout the term of their employment, and will not attain regular status or benefits.

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

    Pre-Employment Process: Prior to appointment, applicants must pass a background investigation which includes verification of employment history and education, fingerprinting, physical exam, and drug screening.

    Employment Status: This position is temporary, and incumbents do not attain status as regular County employee. Although this position is of limited duration and temporary in nature, assignments may be up to twelve (12) months. This position will participate in the County's Deferred Compensation Plan and does not earn any other benefits.

    Physical Demands: Ability to stand, walk, bend, lift (up to 50 lbs.), and handle animals safely in a noisy kennel environment, which may include exposure to animal waste, odors, and communicable diseases.

    Visa Sponsorship: San Bernardino County is not able to consider candidates who will require Visa sponsorship at the time of application or in the future. Candidates must be able to present their legal right to work in the United States at the time of employment.

    Minimum Requirements

    Experience: Six (6) months of experience in a customer-service heavy environment or experience working/volunteering with animal welfare organizations or shelters.

    -AND-

    • Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
    • Available to work on weekends.


    Desired Qualifications

    The ideal candidate will possess excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to interact positively with distressed or high-priority external partners; basic knowledge of animal handling and behavior; proficiency in basic computer applications.

    Exceptional professionalism and diplomacy; strong sense of urgency and problem-solving skills; a proactive and helpful demeanor; passion for animal welfare and the mission of Animal Care is highly desirable.
