The Position Bargaining Unit: Local 856 - General Services & Maintenance Unit The Contra Costa County Public Works Department (CCCPWD) is currently recruiting to fill multiple vacancies in the Public Works Custodian/Recycle Services Division. The Custodian II is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and functionality of County-owned and leased buildings within CCCPWD. Custodian II staff perform a range of essential duties, including cleaning floors, restrooms, and offices, removing trash, and replenishing supplies.
The Contra County Public Works Department (CCPWD) is responsible for the maintenance and operation of over 650 miles of roads, 79 miles of streams and channels, and over 150 County buildings. CCCPWD services include parks and recreation, sandbag distribution, flood control, road and facilities maintenance, and storm water management. CCCPWD operates two airports, Buchanan Field Airport in Concord, and Byron Airport in Byron. CCCPWD strives for continuous improvement to deliver cost effective, safe reliable and sustainable projects, programs, and quality services.

The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill future openings for up to six (6) months.
Minimum QualificationsLicense Required: Possession of a valid California motor vehicle operator's license. Out of state valid motor vehicle operator's license will be accepted during the application process.
Experience: One (1) year of full-time (or the equivalent of full-time) experience performing custodial maintenance in a commercial, industrial or public agency.
Background: Must pass a background investigation.
Desirable Qualifications:- Experience with a floor machine, buffing, stripping and waxing, and carpet cleaning
- Cooperative and personal demeanor
- Ability to remain polite and professional while completing assigned duties
- Experienced and knowledgeable in the use of cleaning chemicals and PPE
- A proven track record of reliable and strong work ethic
Selection Process1. Application Filing: All applicants must apply and submit the information as indicated on the job announcement by the final filing date. Applicants will be required to complete a supplemental questionnaire at the time of application. Applications will be evaluated to determine which candidates will move forward in the next phase of the recruitment process.
2. Performance Examination: A performance examination will be conducted to measure candidates' competencies as they relate to the job. These assessment may include written, physical, and practical components. These may include but not limited to: Decision Making, Adaptability, Attention to Detail, and Safety Focus. (Weighted 100%)
3. Departmental Hiring Interviews: To be scheduled once the eligible list is established.
The Performance Exam is tentatively scheduled to take place in February 2026.
