    The Water and Land Resources Division is at the forefront of King County’s efforts to protect and restore clean water and healthy habitat and strengthen the resilience of communities, environment, and infrastructure in the face climate change. WLRD has a strong track record of developing innovative strategies for protecting working farms and forests, restoring habitat, protecting water quality, and ensuring people have equitable access to green space. We reduce flood hazards, manage stormwater facilities, and reduce toxic threats.  Our Environmental Lab and Science section maintain high-quality data sets used in long term-water quality trend analysis and use Best Available Science to inform decision making.  We house three salmon recovery forums and support the Land Conservation Initiative, which will preserve our last, most important natural lands and urban green spaces over the next 30 years. Our forestry and agricultural programs help people protect their lands and support local food production.

    Summary

    The Conservation Futures Program Planner position will support the Conservation Futures Program Manager in running all aspects of one of the largest and most stable sources of conservation funding in the State of Washington. King County’s Conservation Futures grant program ( http://www.kingcounty.gov/CFT ) awards more than $100 million annually to a broad array of King County work groups, local city governments, and non-governmental organizations in King County to acquire and permanently protect open spaces in King County, including forests, farms, natural lands, trail corridors, and urban green space. Conservation Futures funding is the primary funding source used to implement King County’s Land Conservation Initiative (LCI), which seeks to protect remaining high conservation value land across King County within a generation to create livable, sustainable communities, achieve clean water and healthy habitat, and protect our region’s spectacular natural environment.

    Day to day work will be varied, with duties spanning all aspects of grant management including cultivating ideas with applicants, helping to run the annual grant round, supporting a volunteer advisory committee, supporting budgeting and administration of grants, writing reports, and reviewing progress of funded projects. Other duties associated with this position (up to an estimated 15% of work time) will include supporting projects and programs implementing the LCI, including but not limited to: strategic planning efforts, environmental market-based programs, natural asset management, and community-driven conservation efforts.

    About the Role

    This position will be a great fit for someone with excellent attention to detail who wants to build upon the long track record of success in the Conservation Futures program to conserve open space in King County that will benefit today’s residents and generations to come.

    This position will partner with the Conservation Futures program manager to run an annual grant round and a yearly review of progress on older grant awards. Work includes a wide variety of tasks such as managing program data, writing program materials and reports, expenditure monitoring, creating maps in GIS, and tracking acquisitions. This role will support outreach to agencies and nonprofits and help develop presentation and communication materials for a variety of audiences. A key component is supporting the volunteer advisory committee’s work, including review meetings and field trips. As time allows, this role may also contribute to other aspects of the Land Conservation Initiative (for example, Transfer of Development Rights, natural assets, Open Space Equity Cabinet).

    About the Team

    The Conservation Futures Program is within the Open Space Acquisitions (OSA) Unit, which is responsible for permanently conserving 1,000 acres of land or more each year to achieve LCI goals of protecting vital open spaces across King County. The OSA Unit works in the Rural and Regional Services Section of the Water and Land Resources Division of the Department of Natural Resources and Parks to provide services throughout the WLR Division and to the Parks and Recreation Division, as well. Other work of the OSA Unit includes conducting real estate transactions and running environmental markets.

    Job Duties

    What you will be doing?

    1) Supporting all aspects of administering the Conservation Futures (CFT) grant program

    2) Engaging and managing relationships with non-governmental organizations, cities, and other eligible potential CFT grant applicants to build capacity and ensure funding is distributed equitably

    3) Supporting a variety of other conservation programs to advance King County’s Land Conservation Initiative

    Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

    Qualifications You Bring:
    • Demonstrated experience administering conservation grants, or other grant-related experience such as securing and implementing conservation grants.
    • Skill communicating and building trust with a wide range of parties, from governmental agency staff and potentially elected officials, to nonprofits and community members.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills, and experience working with spreadsheets and numeric data, including strong attention to detail and ability to proofread and edit others’ work.

    Necessary Special Requirements: Washington State Driver’s License

    Supplemental Information

    Working Conditions:

    Remote and Onsite Work Details: Employees in this role work remotely from a home location, with onsite reporting requirements typically 1-2 times per month on average, higher frequency during the late winter/spring grant round. The frequency of onsite work is determined by business needs and may be adjusted accordingly. Onsite reporting locations may be at various King County worksites including the collaboration space at King Street Center (201 S. Jackson St, Seattle, WA 98104).
    Remote Work Location Requirement: Employees must reside in Washington State and be within a reasonable distance to King County worksites to meet onsite reporting requirements.

    Work Schedule:
    This full-time position works a 40-hour work week. This position is covered under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is overtime eligible. While typical work hours are during the standard workday, this job requires evening and weekends to support grant committee processes, particularly in the springtime.
    Union Representation: This position is represented by the Teamsters 117 union.
