The WIC Clinical Professional performs professional educational work for clients of the Women, Infants, and Children program. Work involves coordinating and providing formal and informal instruction in proper nutrition, breastfeeding, and obtaining information from WIC program clients to determine nutritional status of clients and their children, including obtaining blood samples. Employee is also responsible for referring clients to Department clinics or programs, and/or other health care professionals or human services agencies; and preparing and maintaining a variety of records pertaining to clients and other activities. Work also involves conferring with various community groups to promote proper nutritional habits, including breastfeeding.
Examples of DutiesInterviews clients to obtain dietary data in accordance with established policies and procedures, including periodic 24-hour inventories of food consumption; obtains maternal histories from program applicants; weighs and measures clients, and obtains blood samples, using aseptic methods; analyzes nutritional habits and identifies clients at "nutritional risk" according to WIC program standards; monitors effects of nutrition intervention programs and assesses clients' acceptance of prescribed food and dietary routines.
Coordinates and performs clinical nursing functions to provide services to County residents. Interviews clients to obtain personal and routine medical data in accordance with established policies and procedures; prepares and updates client records.
Prepares clients' food issuance records, documenting conferences and prescribed diets, including medical conditions warranting special diets and/or special infant formulas.
Serves as a resource on nutrition and dietetic matters for Department's maternity clinic and physicians, developing and advising about special diets as requested; confers with representatives of other governmental or private human services agencies of health care professionals to promote proper nutritional and dietetic habits, including breastfeeding.
Makes oral presentations to various community, civic, business, school or other groups, as appropriate, on various topics pertaining to nutrition and proper dietetic habits; lectures local college classes; may participate in community "health fairs or similar events.
Develops and prepares annual nutrition education plans and breastfeeding promotion plans, submitting reports to state WIC agency as required; prepares various instructional literature, visual aids and other materials designed to educate clients and public about proper nutrition and dietary routine.
Maintains a list of professionals and others to serve as resources for inquiries pertaining to breast-feeding; monitors effects of promotional and support activities designed to increase breast-feeding among WIC clients, and develops and implements new or amended strategies as necessary; participates in activities of breastfeeding support groups.
Conducts classes for WIC program clients to advice of nutritional needs of infants, children, and child-bearing women, and of proper sources of such nutrition; counsels clients informally on nutritional matters and breast-feeding of infants, advising about dietary habits and providing various literatures, as appropriate.
Answers telephone and receives inquiries, providing information based on knowledge of Department programs and procedures, or referring callers to proper officials or other agencies, as appropriate.
Interviews applicants, explaining scope of WIC program and determining eligibility for assistance; secures financial, social and employment date from applicants; schedules appointments for applicants, and clients.
Issues food vouchers to WIC clients, as appropriate, and maintains logs of vouchers issued in accordance with established policies and procedures; advises clients of proper use of food vouchers.
Regular and punctual attendance is required.
Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum QualificationsHigh School diploma or GED and a minimum of one year of experience in a related field
AND a Registered Nurse (RN) OR Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) OR A minimum of one year of experience
AND a Bachelor’s degree in Home Economics OR other degreed professional with 12 or more semester hours in food and nutrition AND 6 semester hours of science from an accredited university required. Nurses must be licensed by the State of Texas. Equivalent education may be substituted for experience requirement.
Possession of a valid driver's license. Must be able to obtain a State of Texas driver's license within 90 days of employment.
Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred, but not required. Although the position is based in Denton, travel to all Denton County WIC clinics is required.
