Senior Public Relations Specialist
LOCATION: Missouri Division of Tourism
Jefferson City, MO
TRAVEL: Occasional overnight travel may be required
ANNUAL SALARY : $53,000 - $55,000
The salary indicated represents a base pay rate. If the individual selected is eligible for a pay differential (e.g., years of service), it will be added to the total compensation in your paycheck. A pay differential does not raise your base pay.
The Missouri Division of Tourism (MDT) is the administrative arm of the Missouri Tourism Commission, and it advocates for the sound development of the travel and tourism industry in Missouri. MDT’s mission is to promote Missouri as a top-of-mind travel destination and to boost state revenue through increased visitor spending.
The Missouri Division of Tourism is seeking a creative-minded individual to join its communications team as a writer. Candidates should have strong writing and editing skills and a passion for travel, along with knowledge of Missouri and its destinations and attractions. The successful candidate will join a high-performing team focused on promoting Missouri as one of the country’s top leisure-travel destinations. Prior experience in the tourism industry is preferred, but not required. Professional communication or writing experience is required.
What you will do:
• Take direction from the Communications Manager to write and edit content for:
• Visit Missouri’s owned channels such as the Official Missouri Travel Guide and VisitMo.com.
• Visit Missouri’s shared channels such as Instagram, Facebook, and others.
• Provide support to the marketing manager by reviewing paid content for accuracy, grammar, and punctuation.
• Gather, compile, and verify information; compose and/or edit copy for newsletters, brochures, other publications, and websites.
• Serve as lead contact with contracted publishing company that produces the Official Missouri Travel Guide, to include editorial direction, determining timelines, making writing assignments, working with photographer on visual assets, ensuring deadlines are met, overseeing proofing etc.
• Bring creative visions to life across integrated marketing channels which include Web, email blasts, mobile, social media, video, and print.
• Manage business listings on the Division of Tourism website, VisitMo.com.
• Prepare and disseminate informational materials to support and/or promote programs and services of the agency.
• Exercise significant independence and initiative in the performance of responsibilities; receives direction from Communications Manager.
• Perform other related work as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Six or more years of professional experience in public relations, advertising, marketing, film/video production, or journalism. This can be obtained through a combination of work experience and completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism , Communications, English, Public Relations, Advertising, or Marketing , or a closely related field.

• Knowledge of the agency represented, including programs, administrative rules/regulations, and staff.
• Knowledge of marketing and advertising practices and techniques.
• Knowledge of AP Style of writing.
• Ability to work within brand standards.
• Ability to compose and produce a variety of informational materials for release to media or publications.
• Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with agency officials, other employees, and the public.
• Ability to design and prepare exhibits and displays.
• Ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines.
• Ability to demonstrate regular and reliable attendance.
