About the Role :
The role of a Supervising Engineer (Engineer IV) in the Habitat Restoration U nit is to supervis e and mentor engineering staff in the unit , review engineering work products , and facilitate a collaborative environment for project teams. Collaboration and innovation are the cornerstones of restoration design in the Habitat Restoration Unit . The supervising engineer gives guidance and backing to engineering staff and project teams to employ creative problem solving while applying critical thinking to a ssess the effectiveness toward intended function and potential risk .
This position performs work remotely and onsite at field locations and in the office.
About the Team: The Water & Land Resources Division delivers a diverse portfolio of environmental services, including stormwater management, salmon recovery, flood risk management, noxious weed removal and supporting agriculture and forestry. This portfolio puts the Water and Land Resources Division at the center of key plans and initiatives launched by the King County Executive, including Clean Water Healthy Habitat, Strategic Climate Action Plan, Equity and Social Justice Strategic Plan and the Land Conservation Initiative. Job DutiesWhat You Will Be Doing:- Supervise the work program of technical staff, including hiring, performance management, career development and coaching.
- Work with the other members of the Habitat Restoration Unit management team to plan and prioritize project assignments in support of the ecological missions of King County.
- Provide technical assistance and program guidance to Habitat Restoration Unit staff, other supervisors, WLRD, and other county departments.
- Represent Habitat Restoration Unit programs and effectively collaborate on King County initiatives such as the Clean Water Healthy Habitat Strategy and the Strategic Climate Action Plan.
- Provide and/or direct technical and quality engineering review of capital improvement projects to apply accepted design and engineering standards, including making peer review assignments and providing review guidance.
Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, SkillsQualifications You Bring: - A commitment to advance King County's Equity and Social Justice initiative and cultural competence growth.
- Academic and professional work experience that demonstrates the ability to successfully perform the job duties, including river hydraulics and engineering design principals sufficient to provide guidance and oversee the successful design and implementation of habitat restoration and flood protection CIPs.

- Effectively delegate work and acquire staff resources necessary to align with the successful completion of planned milestones.
- Demonstrated skill at building partnerships and working collaboratively with others to meet shared objectives including handling conflict s effectively.

Required Licenses:- Professional Engineering License, issued by Washington State Dept. of Licensing (or obtained via reciprocity w/in 6 months).

- Knowledge of Water and Land Resources Division Project Management Manual or similar approaches to providing best practices and due diligence in the implementation of CIP.
- Knowledge of local watersheds, regional salmon recovery strategies, King County Flood Hazard Management Plan and/or regional stormwater management priorities.
Supplemental InformationWorking Conditions:- Remote and Onsite Work Details: Employees in this role will work remotely from a home location, with in-office visits 1-4 times per month and a dd itional visits to project sites may also be warranted . The frequency of onsite work is determined by business needs and may be adjusted accordingly. Onsite reporting locations may be at various King County worksites including the collaboration space at King Street Center (201 S. Jackson St, Seattle, WA 98104). This work arrangement promotes work-life-balance and reduces carbon footprint under the department’s vision of Green Where We Work .
- Remote Work Location Requirement: Employees must reside in Washington State and be within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to meet workplace reporting requirements.
- Work Schedule: This full-time position will work a 40-hour work week. This position is covered under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is overtime eligible. The typical work schedule is 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Monday- Friday. Work outside the typical work schedule including early mornings, evenings and weekends may be required from time to time.
- Union Representation: This position is represented by PROTEC Local 17A bargaining unit.
- Physical Requirement: This position will have o pportunities for o ccasional field work in inclement weather and uneven terrain.
