- Draft and amend policies and procedures that provide for the prompt and accurate resolution of inquiries from department employees regarding their FMLA process.
- Develop and deliver training curriculum for worksite personnel that ensures consistent management and tracking of FMLA.
- Advises managers and employees on the interaction of leave laws with paid time off, workers compensation, and short-term and long-term disability benefits.
- Maintains knowledge of all applicable leave and accommodation laws including the FMLA and state and local laws. Ensures that policies and procedures comply with federal, state and local laws and regulations. Continually seeks educational opportunities to strengthen FMLA expertise.
- Manages the FMLA leave administration process from the employees; initial notice of the need for leave to the return to work. This includes gathering and completing all required paperwork, determining leave eligibility, designating leave as FMLA-qualifying, requesting medical certification as needed, and accounting for intermittent and reduced schedule leave use.
- Maintains reasonable communication with employees on leave to facilitate smooth and timely return to work; relays communication between employees and their managers during leave within reason.
- Provides strong leadership and excellent supervision to the centralized FMLA team.
- Develops educational information for staff for FMLA processes.
- Maintains complete and accurate records of leave and accommodation requests in accordance with specified legal requirements and documentation of best practices.
- Preserves confidentiality of employee medical documentation and files.
- Develops appropriate supplemental materials for personnel teams and others involved in FMLA tracking.
- Continually seeks new methods and practices that improves the FMLA process for the department.
Preferred Qualifications/Skills: Two years of human resource experience, or related field, is preferred. - Ability to maintain professionalism, demonstrate leadership and lead the FMLA Section.
- Able to facilitate the resolution of FMLA questions, concerns and complaints; assisting both the employee and their administration by providing accurate and timely information.
- Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with department employees and administrators.
- Able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Able to develop and maintain comprehensive training and tracking of FMLA.
- Able to train both small and large groups of employees, and to learn and utilize online training development software.
- Able to prioritize job assignments and manage stress.
- Extensive knowledge of the leave requirements and other legal protections afforded by the FMLA other applicable laws.
- Ability to communicate effectively and to work in cross-functional environments.
- Attention to details, process development and strong organizational skills.
- Ability to travel when needed.
- Excellent analytical, problem solving and process improvement skills.
All requested documents MUST be received by the closing date listed. Contingent upon your position, you may also be eligible to receive:
- A $2.00 per hour shift differential if you are assigned to a shift that begins on or between 12:00pm (noon) and 5:00am and are employed at a 24/7 congregate care facility (i.e. institution, transition center, supervision center, or command center).
- A $0.75 per hour maximum security stipend if you work full-time at a qualifying facility.
- A $1.00 per hour restrictive housing stipend if you are assigned a regular post within a restrict housing/segregation unit at any facility.
The Department of Corrections currently offers a guaranteed 1% pay increase for every two years of continuous service up to 20 years!
