This was indeed a light moment in a remarkably successful evening for all those associated with the making of a movie that also took home the Best Picture Award. The lesson in the quotation, however, may be that while we all want to be in front, we may have a greater responsibility to step back as we achieve more. This becomes an ever-stronger, growing desire as we become more accomplished in our careers through the various roles we have developed ourselves for. Indeed, an organization is formed when talented individuals come together to contribute their talents toward a common goal.

Not long ago, two close friends of our family, Terry and Jacqueline, thoughtfully shared that their lifelong passion for antiquing as a small business had changed. More specifically, the couple observed and explained that over the last few years that their business had seemed to transition from finding and providing rarities that people from around the world sought and would purchase to add to their own personal collections, to a growing line of inquiries in which individuals who were intrigued by a unique piece from the past only wanted a picture.

The position of the kicker on a football team has always intrigued me. Here is a player that for most of the time is practically anonymous. Many of the rival fans and neutrals watching won’t even know his name. He runs on, unannounced and unnoticed, a few times in the game just to kick the ball between the posts, and then disappears again, whilst everybody is generally consumed with the much higher profile players and the more dramatic plays.

Perhaps this is the essence of Pooh’s wisdom. For like Christopher Robin, we too can arrive at any of these desired future states if we employ the courage to walk away from where we’ve been and by continuing to trust the values and knowledge, we all possess in such unique ways as the primary instruments we can masterfully utilize to accomplish our goals.

But I always like to keep my hand in on a few smaller projects at all times too. They keep me grounded. They bring me out to real people, living real lives, with real housing issues. No matter how small their individual project may be on the global scale, for them, it is the biggest project in the world.
