    Job Description

    TPWD MISSION

    To manage and conserve the natural and cultural resources of Texas and to provide hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation opportunities for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.

    GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

    This is a rare opportunity to help connect visitors with some of Texas' most unique and precious resources - dinosaur tracks! The person who succeeds in this role will lead Dinosaur Valley State Park in being a premier interpretive site for the entire Texas State Park system. This person will also provide outstanding leadership and guidance to an interpreter at Dinosaur Valley as well as interpreters across our state park region and the state.     Under the direction of the Park Assistant Superintendent and Park Superintendent , this position is responsible for highly complex (senior-level) state park operations work including management and delivery of the site's interpretation and educational programming and oversight of matters relating to the conservation of the natural/cultural resources of Dinosaur Valley State Park. Provides quality customer service, both internal and external. Supervises the Park Ranger I (Park Interpreter) and assists with daily supervision of staff and volunteers. Other duties include site promotion, outreach programming, marketing, volunteer recruitment, preparation of assigned reports, maintaining standard operating procedures for the park, training staff and volunteers and implementing safety program and park fiscal control plan, interpretive plan, and collection plan. Works under limited supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division, and Branch rules, regulations, and procedures.


    Qualifications:

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    Education:

    Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree.

    Experience:

    Three (3) years of experience in interpretation, conducting educational programs, collection management, museum tours, park programming, living history operations, or closely related field.

    Licensure:

    Applicant must possess a valid State driver's license.

    ACCEPTABLE SUBSTITUTIONS:

    Education:

    One year of experience in interpretation or conducting educational programs may substitute for 30 hours of the required education, with a maximum substitution of 120 semester hours.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    Education:

    Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in Park Administration, Recreation & Parks, Wildlife/Fisheries Science, Natural and/or Cultural Resource Conservation, Range Management, Forestry, Biology, Anthropology, Archeology, History.

    Experience:

    Experience in customer service and/or public relations.

    Experience in park interpretation and/or conducting educational programs.

    Experience in living history interpretation.

    Experience in leading or supervising staff, volunteers, and the general public.

    Experience in outreach.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

    Knowledge of English, spelling, math, and writing skills.

    Knowledge of interpretive techniques such as 3rd person living history, exhibit development, and publication development.

    Knowledge of cultural traditions, historic practices, and experiences.

    Knowledge to develop, implement, manage, publicize, and evaluate related interpretive programs.

    Knowledge of Texas cultural and natural resources.

    Knowledge of basic mathematics.

    Skill in using MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

    Skill in effective verbal and written communication.

    Skill in providing quality customer service in a courteous and professional manner.

    Skill in using standard office equipment.

    Skill in using hand and power tools, mowers, trimmers, chainsaws, tractors, vehicles, generators, and other mechanical equipment.

    Skill to assist with various park duties such as maintenance, administration, or customer service duties as needed.

    Ability to use a computer reservation and revenue system.

    Ability to work as a member of a team.

    Ability to maintain flexibility and work with frequent interruptions and multiple changing priorities.

    Ability to hire, evaluate, and train other staff and/or volunteers.

    Ability to conduct work activities in accordance with the agency employee safety program.

    Ability to speak to large groups of people and various age groups.

    Ability to assist with various park duties such as maintenance, administration, or customer service as needed.

    Ability to work in various weather conditions and climates.

    Ability to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.

    Ability to conduct work activities in accordance with TPWD safety program.

    WORKING CONDITIONS:

    Required to work 40 hours per week, includes various schedules with hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and days off other than Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.

    Required to perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions.

    Required to stand and perform work outdoors for long periods of time.

    May be required to operate a state vehicle.

    Required to travel 15% with possible overnight stays.

    Required to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.

    Non-smoking environment in State buildings and vehicles.
