The City is governed by an independently elected Mayor and eight-member City Council with the City Manager serving as the CEO. Raleigh’s City government provides a wide range of services to a growing community and is widely recognized for its efforts to provide a high quality of life, strong school system and a diverse economy and workforce for its residents. The City Attorney reports to City Council and is responsible for providing sound and confidential legal advice to the Mayor, City Council, City Manager, and each of the City’s departments. Overseeing 22 employees and operating with a FY18 $3.5 million budget, the department advocates on the City’s behalf in federal and State courts, the General Assembly, and before quasi-judicial bodies. The City Attorney must have a solid understanding of a broad array of legal matters related to constitutional law, land use and planning, public finance, employment, public works, public contracts and bidding, as well as the drafting of ordinances and resolutions.
