West Basin Municipal Water District is a California Special District that provides potable and recycled water to local public and investor-owned utilities in the southwest portion of Los Angeles County. The District serves a population of nearly one million residents in 17 cities and various unincorporated areas along the coastal corridor. The District is governed by an elected five-member Board of Directors and is a member agency of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California. The District is a nationally recognized leader in the water industry focusing on water recycling, ocean desalination, conservation, and educational programs. The District operates a major distribution system and four treatment plant facilities, including three satellite plants and the largest treatment facility of its type providing five types of "designer" recycled water used for commercial, industrial and landscaped purposes. The District produces nearly eight billion gallons of water annually to over 200 sites in southern California. The District also operates a pilot ocean desalination plant and is leading an effort to implement a full-scale ocean desalination facility to provide a new reliable source of water to the region.
