City of St. Charles, MO

The City of St. Charles has always been a wonderful place to call home.
  • St. Charles was founded before the American Revolution and is the oldest city on the Missouri River.
  • Lewis and Clark embarked from our riverbank in 1804 to explore the Northwest Territory.
  • From 1821 to 1826, we were the site of the first Missouri state capital.
  • And the federal highway system started right here in 1956.

Today, St. Charles serves as the county seat of the state's fastest growing county and is the second largest city in the St. Louis metropolitan area.

In August of 2008, St. Charles won recognition in Money Magazine as being among the 100 Best Places to live in the nation. St. Charles was chosen for its history as one of the oldest towns west of the Mississippi coupled with the City's modern riverfront and rapid growth. The list took into account job growth, income increases, cost of living and housing, school quality, safety, and other factors.
