Summary Description Under supervision (Network Systems Technician I) or general supervision (Network Systems Technician II), provides liaison and technical assistance to system users for computer, phone and network related problems; consults with department representative to determine hardware/software requirements and develops specifications; sets up, configures and provides support for desktop computer equipment including hardware, software and peripheral equipment; upgrades existing hardware and software; provides technical assistance in support of networked systems; and works on network projects as needed. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS Network Systems Technician I: This is the entry level class in the Network Systems Technician series. This class performs the more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within the series including setting up and configuring desktop computers and performing routine maintenance on the network system. Positions at this level are not expected to function with the same amount of program knowledge or skill level as positions allocated to the Network Systems Technician II level and usually exercise less independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods. Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. Work is normally reviewed only on completion and for overall results. Positions in this class series are flexibly staffed and positions at the Network Systems Technician II level are normally filled by advancement from the Network Systems Technician I level and require completion of a recognized certification program or additional specialized course work and training that provides a comparable level of knowledge. Minimum Requirements Network Systems Technician I/II/III Education/Training: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by college level course work in information systems, computer science or a related field. Network Systems Technician I Experience: One year (full-time equivalent) of experience in information systems in a networked environment. Additional education or training in an appropriate discipline may be substituted for up to one year (full-time equivalent) of the work experience. License or Certificate: Hardware, Microsoft, Cisco or Dell certifications preferred. Network Systems Technician II Experience: Two years (full-time equivalent) of increasingly responsible experience performing duties comparable to a Network Systems Technician I with the City of Escondido. Additional education or training in an appropriate discipline may be substituted for up to one year (full-time equivalent) of the work experience. License or Certificate: Network certification or Microsoft certification. Other specialized course work and training that provides a comparable level of knowledge may be qualifying. Network Systems Technician III Experience: Upon successful completion of the training plan established by the department and at least three years (full-time equivalent) of increasingly responsible experience performing duties comparable to a Network Systems Technician II with the City of Escondido. License or Certificate: A minimum of two technical certifications, such as Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer or Certified Cisco Network Associate. An Associate's degree in computer science or related field may be substituted for the required certification requirement. Position Description Network Specialist I: $28.73 - $34.94 Network Specialist II: $32.19 - $39.14 Under supervision, provides technical expertise, support, management, and administration of networks, servers, databases, PCs and applications in a Microsoft/Cisco network environment. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: Network Specialist I This is the entry level position for the Network Specialist series. The position requires a foundation in technical computer skills and systems. The position requires strong oral and written communication skills; ability to establish and maintain effective interpersonal relationships at all organizational levels; ability to quickly adapt, learn and apply new skills; ability to provide IT related customer and computer support. The Network Specialist I will demonstrate an aptitude and work ethic that is well suited for a multi-tasking, fast paced environment. Network Specialist II This is a journey level technical position requiring knowledge of, and prior job experience with Microsoft and/or CISCO enterprise production environments. The Network Specialist II will provide support and administration of networks, servers, and databases, along with related equipment and software. Essential Job Functions Operates, maintains, repairs, and inspects manual and automatic gas and oil fired high-pressure steam or high temperature hot water boilers. Operates, maintains, repairs, and inspects motors, turbines and steam driven equipment, steam reducing stations, expansion tanks, air compressors, supply and exhaust fans, various kinds of pumps and valves, steam traps, water treatment systems, water heaters and other heating plant auxiliary equipment. Operates, maintains, repairs, and inspects reciprocating, centrifugal or absorption central air conditioning machinery including condensers, evaporators, cooling towers, pumps, purge tanks and related equipment. Adjusts, maintains, tests, and calibrates boiler and air conditioning machinery and mechanical, electrical or pneumatic control instruments and safety devices. Tests boiler water, condensate, cooling tower water, and water from other systems, and adds corrective chemicals. Inspects, adjusts, repairs, and maintains refrigeration units for food storage boxes. Inspects oxygen and vacuum systems for proper pressure and operating conditions. Tests, operates, and maintains emergency diesel powered electric generating equipment. Inspects fire alarm systems and main electrical distribution stations for proper operating conditions. Keeps logs of plant operations and records maintenance and repair work performed. Requirements MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Option I : Completion of a Stationary Engineer's or Operation/Maintenance Engineer's apprentice* program - OR - Option II** : Five (5) years' experience in the operation and maintenance of high or low pressure gas or oil fired boilers and auxiliary equipment, one year of which must have been in the operation and maintenance of refrigeration equipment. One year of classroom training from a trade school, college, a branch of military service, or other equivalent accredited school in the operation, maintenance, and repair of refrigeration equipment, combustion controls or industrial controls equipment, boilers, or water treatment systems related to power plant operations, in any combination, may be substituted for one year of the required special experience. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Credit will be given for additional experience in the operation and maintenance of high or low pressure gas or oil fired boilers, auxiliary equipment and refrigeration equipment. License: A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions. An Unlimited Steam Engineer's License issued by the City of Los Angeles' Department of Building and Safety. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved Universal Technician Certificate in compliance with Federal license requirements as provided in Chapter V, Section 608. Physical Class III - Moderate : Includes standing or walking most of the time, with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching; includes working on irregular surfaces, occasionally lifting objects weighting over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.
