The Letchworth Trails Laborer will work as part of a team to perform a wide range of trail maintenance and construction tasks. The incumbent will report directly to the assigned Park Supervisor or Trails Specialist and will work with up to four trail crew members and assist volunteer group projects. Housing is not provided. Primary duties include, but are not limited to: • Dimensional lumber stairs and retaining wall construction. • Bridge and boardwalk construction. • New trail construction. • Tread and drainage improvements. • Upkeep of stone staircases and retaining walls. • General facilities maintenance. • Hazard tree removal. • Off-season work will include winter trail grooming and risk tree removal activities in coordination with Parks operation staff. • Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions, with both hand and power tools. POSITION PURPOSE / IMPORTANT APPLICATION INFORMATION The Seasonal Specialist positions are responsible for a variety of maintenance work including mowing, edging, weed whacking, and light construction. These positions work throughout the city in Open Space. These positions are physically demanding in nature with exposure to extreme weather conditions. These positions work four (4) ten (10)-hour days during the week (Tuesday-Friday) however hours may vary with possible weekend, holiday, and special events. Assists in applying granular and liquid fertilization applications 3. Operates light and heavy equipment including chippers, chainsaws, landscape construction equipment, skid-steers, industrial mowers, pick-up trucks, mowers, backpack blowers, small dump trucks, or similar equipment 4. Performs general custodial work at public facilities and open space areas including removing trash and cleaning of shelters and restrooms 5. Painting designated facilities and structures 6. Assists with a variety of construction-related projects and playground maintenance 7. Possesses a valid driver’s license and maintains a safe driving record 8. Maintains regular and punctual attendance Open Space Job Specific Functions: 1. Physical Requirements This position requires a moderate degree of physical stamina and strength, including the ability to: Frequently sit, stand and walk on uneven terrain Occasionally squat, bend, kneel, twist, climb, balance and reach over head Occasionally lift, carry, push or pull items weighing up to fifty (50) pounds Frequently use hands and fingers for fine manipulation; occasionally use light and firm grasp Occasionally step up and down to enter and exit vehicles and climb ladders; constant actuate mechanism to safely operate heavy equipment and vehicles Frequently see objects up close to perform office tasks and far away to observe activity for safety hazards or problems Constantly use hearing to interact with guests and staff and recognize trouble outside of view Occasionally use sufficient physical strength, stamina and agility to perform emergency work in various capacities WORKING CONDITIONS Work is constantly performed indoors and outdoors with constant exposure to extreme temperatures year-round. Required Materials and Equipment Operates light equipment such as pick-up trucks, small dump trucks, tractors, horticultural hand tools, rototillers, water equipment, trenchers, sod-cutters, pruners, and other equipment as necessary.
