The Recreation Instructor is a broad classification and encompasses various assignments with department flexibility to assign employees based on the meeting of wage qualifiers. Employees will be assigned utilizing a formula which incorporates the following characteristics: Wage Qualifiers : An individual assigned to Recreation Instructor will be reviewed and placed according to the meeting of the below qualifiers. It is important to note the Recreation Instructor is subject to regular review upon initial placement and each time the same class/program is proposed/submitted/held, a new/revised class/program is submitted/held and/or to ensure the individual is meeting the noted qualifiers and placement to wage is or remains appropriate. Each class is looked at individually to determine a rate of pay, using a formula that is based on the following: Determined number of hours an instructor will need to work in a given class/program session; Determined charge/rate for class/program and use of that rate to assist in determining the instructor's rate of pay; The facility capacity to meet the minimum and maximum class/program size standards; Minimum and maximum required to teach a successful class/program; Minimum and maximum numbers to cover cost of said instructor's minimum rate; and Job performance will be evaluated and increased/decreased based on the instructor's evaluation and the number of participants enrolled. Minimum Qualifications/Special Requirements Education and Experience: High school diploma or GED certificate, and One (1) year experience as a teacher, tutor, counselor, or coach in an organized recreational program or related field at the level of a recreation assistant or recreation volunteer. Job Description and Duties LIFEGUARD II (SEASONAL) - BAY AREA DISTRICT / SAN FRANCISCO BAY SECTOR Priority consideration will be given to any person receiving State public assistance under the CalWORKS program. Applicants who receive State public assistance need to identify their status as a CalWORKS recipient in the comments area on the application. This position works under the supervision of the State Park Peace Officer Supervisor (Ranger or Lifeguard). The reporting location is Angel Island State Park. Primary responsibilities include performing first aid and CPR as needed, detecting and rescuing persons or vessels in distress, educating visitors about rules and regulations, providing daily leadership for the Lifeguard I (Seasonal) staff and working as a deckhand on State Park vessels, with an emphasis on assisting peace officers with a wide variety of medical emergencies. This position works as a crew member on State Park vessels as a deckhand. Pre-employment and random drug testing is a U.S. Coast Guard requirement. Time worked as a deckhand can count toward boat operator licensure. This is an excellent opportunity to gain experience toward a career as a licensed boat operator, and offers the opportunity to build a base of knowledge for becoming a rescue boat operator at another unit in the future. GENERAL PURPOSE: Responsible for instructing, supervising and testing children and adults in swim lesson program. Helps to organize and control classes under the direction of the Aquatics Specialist. Must be available to work mornings, some evenings, weekends and holiday hours. Must be at least 16 years of age. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Enhances Loveland Park & Recreation image and ensures a quality visit for guests by instructing, testing and evaluating participants in the swim lesson program. Ensures the safety of all participants in their swimming classes by safe and proper usage of equipment. Performs necessary lifesaving procedures; handles emergencies according to standard procedure. Assist with registration for swimming lessons; submits class lesson plans; oversees guests enrolled in the swim program. Attends required in-service training and/meetings, to stay current on teaching methods as appropriate. Inspects classroom/program environment and equipment to ensure safety. Maintains progress records of each child enrolled in class; completes administrative tasks like attendance sheets and class evaluations. Disseminate and promote Parks and Recreation program information and educate users of potential opportunities and services available. Directs public to proper locations; provides general facility use instructions; enforces facility policies and procedures by informing guests of existing policies. OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS: Maintains order in classes to ensure a safe environment and promote a learning atmosphere. May be required to cross train into other areas for duties as assigned. JOB QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge, skills and abilities : Must have the ability to recognize, react quickly and appropriately in emergency situations.
