Essential Job Functions Drives two or more axle vehicles (automatic and non-synchro manual transmission) with a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 lbs. or more by safely maneuvering vehicles (e.g., through remote areas, unpaved, off road) in different weather conditions; following traffic laws; utilizing road/electronic maps/GPS in order to make emergency repairs, deliver vehicles, and road test vehicles. Troubleshoots electrical, mechanical, and brake systems, and hydraulic problems on gasoline and diesel apparatus by using visual inspection techniques and a variety of test equipment (e.g., pressure gauges, computer diagnostic equipment, flow-charts, schematics, multi-meter) in order to locate the source of problems and determine what corrective actions are needed (e.g., adjustments, repairs, replacement of parts). Repairs gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, rear axle, rotary and centrifugal pumps, and transfer case by removing and replacing defective parts, overhauling parts, fabricating parts, etc. using a variety of handheld, hydraulic, and power tools, pneumatic tools and equipment (e.g., micrometers, pullers, wrenches) in order to return the vehicle back into service. Performs maintenance on a variety of fire equipment (e.g., air and hydraulic brakes, power steering, suspensions, electrical systems, and powertrain) by replacing worn parts, changing fluids, etc., using a variety of tools and equipment (e.g., wrenches, pliers) in order to adhere to a pre-established maintenance schedule. Performs general welding and fabrication by gathering and utilizing appropriate materials (e.g., welding machine, electrodes, metal to be welded), and putting on safety gear (e.g., welding helmet, gloves, welding goggles) in order to make repairs or pre-approved modifications to equipment. Completes forms, work orders, and makes logbook entries (e.g., brief written reports, inspection checklists, maintenance logs) by hand and/or using a computer word processing and/or email application in order to complete the necessary paperwork for state and federally mandated inspections, and to document the performance of scheduled maintenance, report issues or problems. Requirements SELECTION REQUIREMENTS : Completion of a recognized apprentice training program* of at least four (4) years' duration in the repair of gas and diesel automotive and power equipment*** - and - One (1) years' experience at the journey level** - OR - Six (6) years' experience in the repair and maintenance of gas and diesel automotive and power equipment***, two (2) years of which must have been at the journey level.** REQUIRED LICENSE: A valid California Class B or higher Driver's License is required to perform job-related duties. DEFINITION: Performs journey-level elevator and escalator maintenance and repair work. Essential Job Functions Tests and adjusts general operating and safety features of elevators, dumbwaiters, and escalators such as speed, acceleration, leveling, braking, emergency stop, and alarm bell. Maintains and repairs electronic control panels, switches, relays, signal devices, electric motors, generators and related equipment. Inspects, adjusts, maintains, and repairs hoist motors and machinery, governors, door mechanisms, cables, hydraulic buffers, pumps, brakes, rails, guides and related equipment. Determines the need for and performs major overhaul or replacement of defective equipment. Maintains work records. Maintains tools and equipment. Drives automotive equipment to work sites. Supervises trainees and helpers. Requirements MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Option I: Completion of a recognized elevator mechanic training program of at least four years, duration. -OR- Option II: Five (5) years of experience in the maintenance and repair of elevators or escalators, one year of which must have been at the journey-level*. LICENSE: **A Los Angeles City Certificate of Registration as a Journey Elevator Mechanic. **Effective June 30, 2003 certification, temporary certification, or emergency certification by the State of California Department of Industrial Relations, Division of Occupational Safety and Health, as a Certified Competent Conveyance (elevator) Mechanic (CCCM). **A City of Los Angeles Regulation 4 Certificate may be required for testing Life/Safety systems in County buildings located within the city limits of Los Angeles. Life/Safety systems are defined as: fire alarms, automatic-closing fire assemblies, elevator recall, fire suppression, and emergency power systems. Please be sure to include the title of the required license/certificate(s), the license/certificate(s) number, date issued, date of expiration and the name of issuing agency as specified in the Selection Requirements and Desirable Qualifications on your application. Required license(s) and/or certification(s) must be active and unrestricted, or your application will NOT be accepted. **A valid California Class C Driver License is required to perform the job-related essential functions. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Certified Elevator Technician certificate**, issued by the National Association of Elevator Contractors. Additional Information EXAMINATION CONTENT: This examination will consist of an evaluation of education and experience based upon application information and desirable qualifications, weighted at 100%. Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on this examination in order to be placed on the Eligible Register. ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION: Applications will be processed on an "as-received" basis and those receiving a passing score will be promulgated to the eligible register accordingly. The names of candidates receiving a passing score in the examination will be added to the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation. NO PERSON MAY COMPETE IN THIS EXAMINATION MORE THAN ONCE EVERY TWELVE (12) MONTHS.
