The City of Palm Desert is seeking a Senior Engineer who specializes in Transportation. This vacancy was created by the retirement of a long-term employee that served the City in coordinating the engineering and operations of the City’s traffic infrastructure, systems, and equipment. This position will provide highly complex and responsible support to the Director of Public Works, City Engineer, and others in areas of expertise. Duties will require performing diverse, specialized, and complex work involving significant accountability and decision-making responsibility.  The City of Palm Desert is a forward thinking City interested in providing balanced transportation plans serving the needs of pedestrians, cyclists and motorists. A number of exciting projects are in the near future and this position offers the incumbent an opportunity to play an integral role in the continued development of the City.

The ideal incumbent will have experience in organizing a City’s transportation engineering activities, including capital improvement planning and development and administration of federal, state, and local funds for capital improvements, expansions, and various other projects and studies. Successful performance will require excellent collaboration and customer service skills, and experience in coordinating work with other City departments and public agencies. 

Job Requirements

Minimum Qualification:

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

Equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in traffic, civil, or transportation engineering, or a related field, and five (5) years of increasingly responsible professional traffic/transportation engineering experience.

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California Driver’s License by time of appointment.
  • Valid registration as a Professional Traffic or Civil Engineer in the State of California

Knowledge of:

  • Administrative principles and practices, including goal setting, program development, implementation, and evaluation, project management, and budget and contract development and administration.
  • Principles and practices of traffic and transportation engineering and planning.
  • Practices of engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting effective staff reports.
  • Recent and on-going developments, current literature, and sources of information related to traffic systems engineering, operations, and maintenance.

Ability to:

  • Assist in developing and implementing goals, objectives, practices, policies, procedures, and work standards. Administer complex and technical engineering, operations, maintenance, and related programs in an independent and cooperative manner.
  • Review and evaluate project plans and specifications and area-wide traffic studies and analyses.
  • Conduct complex research projects, evaluate alternatives, make sound recommendations, and prepare effective technical staff reports.
  • Conduct effective negotiations and effectively represent the City and the department in meetings with governmental agencies, contractors, vendors, and various businesses, professional, regulatory, and legislative organizations.
  • Organize and prioritize a variety of projects and multiple tasks in an effective and timely manner; organize own work, set priorities, and meet critical time deadlines.
