- Leads the work of assigned staff; delegates, reviews, and prioritizes work assignments; provides guidance and direction on more complex activities
- Performs remodeling and demolition projects for buildings and structures; develops and maintains project status
- Monitors and initiates contract renewals; prepares informal quotes for materials and services; completes purchase order paperwork
- Installs electrical systems, fixtures, and equipment, including power appliances, motors, generators, conduit, switches, relays, control boxes, transformers, and lighting fixtures
- Installs piping systems, lavatories, skinks, toilets, urinals, drinking fountains, grease traps, valves, faucets and other kitchen, bathroom or toilet fixtures
- Ensures continued operation of building and facilities systems; performs service, repair, and inspections
- Maintains inventory and proper care of tools, materials, and equipment
- Tracks and accounts for work completed
- Performs related work as required
An employee in this class performs a variety of skilled tasks in the major construction trades of carpentry, electricity and/or plumbing and a variety of skilled or semi-skilled tasks in other construction trades. Employees may supervise and instruct semi-skilled and unskilled workers and may participate in a wide variety of construction work at all skill levels. An employee in this class performs tasks with general instructions and must exercise some independent judgment in the accomplishment of work assignments.
May perform skilled journeyman level carpentry tasks such as constructing floors, stairs, roofs, partitions, closets, joists, trusses, rafters, doors, windows and related wooden structures.
May fabricate and install cabinets, bookcases, furniture and related articles including the application of formica and other veneers and the installation of hardware.
May perform skilled bench work operating and caring for such power tools as planers, jointers, saws, sanders, and boring, tenoning and mortising machines.
May perform skilled plumbing tasks such as the installation of piping systems, lavatories, sinks, toilets, urinals, drinking fountains, grease traps, valves, faucets and other kitchen, bathroom or toilet fixtures.
May perform skilled journeyman electrical tasks such as the installation of electrical systems, fixtures and equipment, including power appliances, generators, switches, control boxes, and lighting fixtures.
May perform skilled or semi-skilled tasks in other construction trades such as painting, mixing and pouring concrete and finishing concrete mixing, applying and finishing plaster constructing rough carpentry items, cutting and placing steel bars and wire mesh reinforcement for concrete and plaster, mixing mortar and placing cement blocks, bricks or stone materials, applying cement, and placing tiles and grout, and install brick pavers.
May perform skilled tasks such as caring for tools, equipment and materials; may perform manual labor tasks such as cleaning up work sites, removing debris, digging and removing dirt, laying sod, carrying tools, installing fencing, and other construction related tasks.
May perform inspections and maintenance to park playground equipment and systems
This job classification is included within the bargaining unit represented by Teamsters Local Union 769 and therefore is subject to the terms and conditions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the City of Fort Lauderdale and Teamsters Local Union 769. JOB REQUIREMENTS & WORK ENVIRONMENT:
HOW TO APPLY/ VETERAN INFORMATION:
- High School Degree or G.E.D. equivalency and three (3) to five (5) years of construction experience, at least one (1) years of which must have been at the journeyman level. Serves as a lead worker.
- Additional qualifying experience or completion of coursework at an accredited college or university in a job-related field, may substitute on a year-for-year basis for one year of the required experience or education.
- Commercial Driver's License (CDL) - Class A or B with Air Brake may be required
Depending on the number of applicants and the quality of their education and experience, the examination may consist of one or more of the following tests: Evaluation of Training and Experience, Oral Interview, Written Examination, or other assessment methods. Applicants must attain a minimum score of 70 in each part of the examination in order to qualify. All successful applicants will be required to pass a medical examination, including drug screening, prior to appointment.
An eligible veteran who enters an open-competitive examination shall receive preference points added to the total passing score earned in the examination as provided for in the Florida Statutes.
