Essential Job Functions A Senior Pool Lifeguard is responsible for performing a combination of the following essential job functions: Conducts continuous surveillance of an assigned pool area for signs of swimmers in trouble, violations of pool and safety regulations, and equipment malfunctions. Assigns staff to established posts: readjusting coverage or requesting additional help in the event of unusually high patronage. Counsel lifeguards and corrects inappropriate behavior or techniques by example or explanation; refers ineffective lifeguards to the pool manager for disposition. Responds and resolves incidents at the pool such as persistent violations of safety rules, serious injuries, or minor confrontations among patrons. Monitors automatic or manual filtration systems; ensures that chemicals are added, and backwash cycle is activated, as necessary, makes minor repairs and reports major repairs to pool manager. Participates in the formal instruction of lifeguard staff by demonstrating first-aid procedures, lifesaving techniques, and learn-to-swim teaching methods. Recommend closure of the swimming pool to the public due to health or safety hazards as needed. Engages in physical fitness program established by the department in order to maintain capability to perform lifesaving duties. Requirements SELECTION REQUIREMENTS: Six months of full-time or 960 hours of part-time experience as a pool lifeguard*. * Pool lifeguards are responsible for continuous surveillance of a pool, enforcing pool and safety rules, performing water rescues, administering first aid, and teaching swim classes. LICENSE: A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions. Hearing: There may be no greater than a 25 dB loss in the better ear as averaged over the test frequencies of 500, 1000, 2000, and 3000 Hz. There may not be a peak loss at any of the test frequencies greater than: 30 dB at 500 Hz 30 dB at 1000 Hz 40 dB at 2000 Hz 40 dB at 3000 Hz There may be no greater than a 35 dB loss in the worse ear as averaged over the test frequencies, and no peak loss greater than 45 dB at any of the test frequencies. In case of a questionable, unusual, or borderline hearing loss, the applicant's record will be reviewed by the Occupational Health Service consultant in otolaryngology who will make a recommendation as to the applicant's employability and forward it to the Medical Director for final disposition. The Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine is a nationally recognized and award-winning organization with 1,100 full-time/part time staff and a budget of $74 million. The Department oversees facilities and programs that reflect the needs and interests of a culturally diverse community, including: 170 parks with more than 3,200 acres devoted to open space and recreation, 27 community centers, 3 public pools, 6 miles of beaches, and 3 marinas. The Department provides free and fee-based recreational programs and leisure opportunities, both self-directed and organized, for people of all ages and cultures. Youth programs include free youth sports for ages 5 to 14 serving nearly 10,000 participants annually, summer and vacation day camps, 2,100 recreational and educational classes, sailing and aquatics instruction, teen center activities, skateboarding opportunities, and supervised afterschool and weekend activities at parks and schools. In addition, approximately 12,000 youth participate in non-Department sports leagues that utilize park facilities. The Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine is seeking qualified candidates interested in applying for a Senior Lifeguard position. There are positions available at Belmont Pool, Silverado Pool and Martin Luther King Jr. Pool. This is an unclassified, non-career position. Unclassified positions with the City do not require applying through the Civil Service process. All communication will be handled through the department. Non-career employees are not typically eligible for health/dental/vision benefits; however, may be eligible for sick leave benefits. Scheduled hours may vary by week on an as-needed basis, not to exceed 1,600 work hours per service year. Non-career employees are not guaranteed a minimum number of work hours. This is an at-will, seasonal, part-time position. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES Assist the Aquatics Supervisor with ongoing staff training and annual in-service training; Supports the Aquatics Supervisor in overseeing daily operations during a shift Assist in planning and implementing various program activities Instruct a variety of swimming classes, water aerobics, and complete swim lesson evaluations; Serves as a lifeguard or instructor guard, as required; Monitor and maintain accurate registration and attendance records; Collect pool fees and prepare daily activity summary reports and bank deposit forms; Maintain equipment and supplies; Assists with routine pool cleaning and maintenance work on or around the swimming pool; Act as lead staff in emergency and rescue situations; Drive to offsite meetings and/or trainings; Perform other related duties as assigned.
