DESCRIPTION

The City of Long Beach, Department of Health and Human Services is recruiting for a Maintenance Assistant I (Non-Career) position in the Collective Impact and Operations Bureau. Reporting to a Building Services Supervisor, this position will provide a variety of routine maintenance and custodial duties for Department facilities.

Non-Career employees are allowed a maximum of 1,600 work hours available over a 12-month period, and are considered temporary, at-will employees who are not typically eligible for benefits. However, Non-Career employees may qualify for health coverage and sick leave accruals subject to applicable federal and state provisions.

This position will be located at one of seven Department facilities located throughout the City of Long Beach.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Cleans, sweeps, mops, and waxes floor coverings and walkways;
  • Vacuums, cleans, and shampoos carpets;
  • Cleans, dusts, and polishes woodwork, walls, partitions, equipment, and furniture;
  • Washes windows;
  • Cleans restroom fixtures and replenishes restroom supplies;
  • Disposes waste and cleans waste receptacles;
  • Fills and maintains water coolers;
  • Replaces light bulbs and lamps;
  • Reports hazardous conditions and needed repairs; and,
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


REQUIREMENTS TO FILE

  • Ability to lift and move heavy objects up to 50 pounds (subject to medical exam by Occupational Health Officer).
  • Willingness and ability to work evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, on-call, and during emergencies as required.
  • Valid motor vehicle operator license (Required to obtain a California motor vehicle operator license within 6 months of employment if license is out of state. DMV K4 driver history report required during onboarding).
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Professional experience performing maintenance duties.
  • Professional experience performing custodial duties.
  • Working knowledge of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
  • Working knowledge of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and their protocol and usage.
SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE WILL DEMONSTRATE:
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions;
  • Ability to use common hand and power tools used in skilled trades, maintenance, and custodial work;
  • Ability to use simple arithmetic;
  • Ability to endure long periods of physical labor;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, be flexible, and manage multiple assignments in a dynamic and fast-paced environment;
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide variety of people and populations by consistently exercising tact, good judgment, and a proactive, problem-solving focused style;
  • Ability to deal courteously with clients and members of the public;
  • Effective interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills; and,
  • Proficiency in the use of computers, including email, internet, and Microsoft Office (e.g. Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.).
