Job Description

The Santa Clara County Counsel's Office, recent Hodson awardee by the American Bar Association (ABA) for its outstanding performance and extraordinary legal service in the public sector, is looking for its next Assistant County Counsel to complete its team of esteemed legal professionals.

The Assistant County Counsel is an unclassified, at-will, executive leadership position responsible for the strategic planning and development and the overall administration of the Office of County Counsel, to manage staff and functions as necessary or required, and to perform administrative professional legal work. The Assistant County Counsels perform high level and difficult legal work including advising and representing the Board of Supervisors, County Executive, County officers, departments, and boards and commissions in civil matters of a complex nature requiring expertise in local government law.

Typical Tasks
  • Plans, organizes, supervises, assigns and evaluates the work of attorneys in the County Counsel's Office to ensure the performance of quality legal work in research, writing, advising and
  • Assists the County Counsel in the development and implementation of departmental policies and procedures;
  • Performs assignments of a complex nature in advice and representation;
  • Represents the County Counsel on and before various boards and commissions;
  • Reviews opinions, contracts and other documents prepared by attorneys in the Office;
  • Reviews for legal content letters addressed to the Board of Supervisors for closed session;
  • Performs administrative assignments which may include directing activities of the office manager, assisting in the preparation and maintenance of the office budget, making recommendations for the hiring of professional staff and assisting in the hiring of support staff, and coordinating continuing education and training of attorneys;
  • Performs related work as required.



Employment Standards

Active member in good standing with the California State Bar and sufficient education, training and work experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the management responsibilities and the possession and application of the knowledge and abilities listed below.

A qualified candidate would typically possess at least seven (7) years experience as an attorney managing complex legal assignments; OR five (5) years experience performing professional legal work, at least two of which have been devoted primarily to municipal or county government law. It is desirable that qualified candidates possess experience managing complex assignments of a sensitive nature that required adherence to tight deadlines and involved multiple personnel.

Knowledge of:
  • Civil, constitutional and administrative law;
  • Principles of organizational development, administrative management and supervision;
  • Principles and laws affecting the powers and duties of the County and its officers, the Board of Supervisors and special districts, boards, and commissions;


           Judicial procedures and rules of evidence.

Ability to:
  • Perform legal research;
  • Analyze, appraise and organize facts, evidence and precedents and present such material verbally and/or in writing in clear, logical and persuasive form;
  • Work closely with the County Counsel in developing, implementing and defending public policies established by the Board of Supervisors, the County Executive and other public offices represented by the Office;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, members of the legal profession, other governmental offices, and staff;
  • Plan, assign, direct and evaluate the work of subordinate attorneys and support staff;
  • Advise and represent clients.
